The second leg of this year’s Europa League 2023/2024 quarter-finals feature two unenviable tasks for English teams, who face an uphill battle to reach the last four. The Hammers are 2-0 down against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, while Liverpool have a 3-0 deficit to overcome against Atalanta after their shock Anfield defeat at the hands of the Serie A side last week.
Reds likely to be involved in thriller
Liverpool had a nightmare seven days last week, losing 3-0 at home to Atalanta before falling 1-0 to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday. Back-to-back defeats at Anfield are a rarity for the Reds and they have been a hammer blow to the chances of Jurgen Klopp leaving the club with more than the one trophy, having already secured this season, the EFL Cup.
It’s not clear how strong the German manager will go for this second leg, considering the difficulty of the task at hand. In Europa League history there have been 132 instances of an away team winning by three or more goals in the first leg of a knockout tie and the deficit has never been overturned. This match-up is likely to have plenty of goals however as the Reds will have to go for it if they are to achieve the task of qualifying for the semis.
Liverpool’s last three away games have produced four or more goals and a repeat of that looks likely here. Atalanta showed their attacking abilities in the first leg and this is likely to be an open game, take over 3.5 goals.
Milan to return favour against Serie A rivals
Roma produced a shock 1-0 win away to AC Milan in the first leg of their tie, but could fall to defeat at home to the same opponents in their second meeting. The away side are one of only two teams to win at the Stadio Olimpico from 22 attempts this season, continuing their solid record at this venue. Milan have won three of the last four head-to-heads here and are fancied to repeat the trick in this second leg.
Leverkusen looking rock solid
Bayer Leverkusen secured an historic Bundesliga Title on Sunday with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen and now the German side turn their attention to aiming to remain unbeaten in all competitions and securing a treble. Xabi Alonso’s side won the shot count by an amazing 33-1 in the first leg at home to West Ham, winning 2-0, and they should have little issue winning again on the road.
The Hammers also put in a tame performance as they lost 2-0 to Fulham at the weekend and may struggle to lay a glove on the visitors, who have been one of the best teams in Europe this season.
