Euro 2024 Last 16: Dutch Delight in Germany

The remaining Euro 2024 Last 16 matches take place on Tuesday with Romania facing the Netherlands before Austria clash with Turkiye. All four teams lost at least one game in the group stages, but all have also impressed at times and they look intriguing match-ups. For all their history and their vast depth of players, the Netherlands have been somewhat disappointing in the last decade or so, and the natives are beginning to get restles back home in the Netherlands.

Euro 2024 Last 16: Netherlands Warming Nicely

The Netherlands were one of the nations who were being touted as contenders before the tournament started, but their Group D performances didn’t make for great viewing. Ronald Koeman’s men came from behind to win their opener with Poland and they were expected to kick on from there.

A draw with France all but confirmed their place in the knockout stages, but they eventually finished third after losing 3-2 to Austria in their final group game. Meanwhile, Romania caused a surprise by topping Group E after also collecting four points from their opening three matches.

A crushing 3-0 win over Ukraine put them in a strong position and although they suffered a defeat to Belgium, a draw with Slovakia was enough to see them through. Their lack of experience though in knockout football could prove crucial as they face a Dutch team with a much stronger squad and more options at their disposal.

It was back at Euro 2000 the last time Romania got out of the group at a major tournament, while the Dutch made the quarter-finals at the last World Cup, before eventually succumbing to Argentina. The head-to-head stats don’t make good reading for Romania fans, with the Dutch winning their last three meetings by an aggregate score of 11-1. Goals have been an issue for Edward Iordanescu’s men, finding the net four times in their last five internationals – with three of those coming against Ukraine.

Austria can show they are contenders

Some would argue that Austria have been the most impressive team of the tournament to date and they have a wily manager at the helm. Ralph Ragnick has had 41 years of experience as a manager and is certainly getting the best out of his Austria squad, who finished top of Group D.

Only Germany outscored the Austrians in the group stage, with Ragnick’s men bagging six times in their opening three games. In Marcel Sabitzer and Christoph Baumgartner, they have two of the best midfielders in the competition – they are two of 12 players in the squad that play their club football in Germany.

Turkey were very entertaining across their opening three matches, eventually finishing second in Group F, which also included Portugal, Georgia and the Czech Republic. They have also shown they know where the back of the net is, firing five goals across two of their group matches. These two teams met in a friendly back in March, with Austria running out 6-1 winners, as Michael Gregoritsch fired in a hat-trick.
