For Les Bleus, the pool stage represents a chance to build momentum and form before kicking on in the knockout stages, but the other sides will be more concerned with taking things one game at a time to enhance their hopes of progressing to the last 16.

France could cruise through
France, beaten finalists at the 2022 World Cup, will be determined to go one better and have a phenomenal tournament record under Didier Deschamps, reaching three finals under his tutelage, including winning the 2018 World Cup.
They flopped at the last Euros, going out on penalties in the last 16 after an all-time classic against Switzerland. However, there were extenuating circumstances with injuries having ripped through their squad.
Les Bleus responded by coming within another penalty shootout of winning a third world title and, despite being behind 3.55 England in the outright odds, 4.35 France have a proven pedigree on the big stage.
Captain Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot in Qatar and leads an incredible attack backed up by a super-smooth midfield. At the back, William Saliba could establish himself as his country’s defensive fulcrum, while Mike Maignan has excelled as Hugo Lloris’s replacement in goal.
France beat Group D rivals the Netherlands at home and away in qualifying and top spot looks theirs for the taking, with a third European title very much a possibility.
Expect defence-first from the Dutch
The Dutch went through a period in the doldrums but Louis van Gaal guided them to the quarter-finals at the last World Cup and Ronald Koeman, who kickstarted the Oranje’s revival between 2018 and 2020, has built on King Louis’s blueprint.
Koeman has experimented with a classic 4-3-3 line-up but looks set to start the Euros with a back three, as most of his best players are defenders.
The fixture list works for the Netherlands, as they should beat both Poland first time out and matchday three opponents Austria. That would mean they could afford to slip up against France, and there is a reason they are just 1.17 to qualify.
Finishing second would pit the Dutch against the runners-up in Group E. None of those potential sides are unbeatable, but their campaign may end in the last eight.
Austria are awkward opponents
Austria qualified well, finishing second to Belgium by a point in Group F, and have undoubtedly improved under Ralf Rangnick.
Das Team lack global superstars, especially with Real Madrid’s David Alaba ruled out with a knee injury. However, Rangnick will have a plan for all three of this team’s Group D opponents and their 1.85 to qualify could be a reasonable price, with four of the third-placed sides going through.
The Austrians made the last 16 of Euro 2020, which may again be their ceiling. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t cause a few scares along the way.
Euro 2024 Group D: Poland look set to struggle
Poland were sluggish in qualifying, faltering under Fernando Santos, but they picked up enough following Michal Probierz’s appointment to make it through the playoffs.
The Eagles possess star quality in Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinksi but are otherwise a functional outfit who lack nuance in attack.
They made it to the last 16 in Qatar before being outclassed by France and may struggle to improve on the single point they picked up in their three matches at Euro 2020.
