After playing out an enthralling 2-2 draw in last week’s first leg in Munich, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will lock horns once again in the return match of their Champions League 2023/2024 semi-final tie at the Bernabeu on Wednesday. With a place in next month’s final at Wembley at stake, these two European heavyweights will be going all out to secure the victory.
Real to seal Wembley trip
Real Madrid will head into Wednesday’s second leg in good spirits after sealing a 36th La Liga title at the weekend and their 3-0 victory over Cadiz on Saturday extended their unbeaten run to 20 matches. Los Blancos are a force on home soil, where they have not lost for 13 months, and they will expect to have enough to see off a Bayern side whose own away form has been patchy to say the least.
The Bavarians warmed up for this second leg with a 3-1 loss at Stuttgart in the Bundesliga and they have now won only two of their last nine away fixtures, with those victories coming at struggling Darmstadt and Union Berlin. While wins have been hard to come by on the road, Bayern are at least scoring regularly, netting in seven straight away games, a run they can extend against a Real side that have kept only two clean-sheets across their last 10 Champions League matches.
However, that might be as good as it gets for Thomas Tuchel’s visitors, who are without a win in their last eight competitive meetings with Real.
Vinicius to get Los Blancos up and running
Vinicius Junior scored both of Real’s goals in last week’s first leg, including the opener, and the Brazil international could get Carlo Ancelotti’s team off to another fast start in Madrid. That brace in Munich took Vinicius to 21 goals for the season across all competitions and he should be refreshed for Wednesday’s return match after only being used as a late substitute against Cadiz.
With six of his 21 strikes having been the opening goals of contests, it would be no surprise to see the 23-year-old break the deadlock in this second leg.
Rodrygo not afraid to shoot
While Vinicius and Jude Bellingham have been making most of the headlines for Real this season, forward Rodrygo has also been performing, netting 17 goals all told, including five in the Champions League. Rodrygo is certainly not afraid of taking shots on, as only Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland of Manchester City have had more efforts on goal in this season’s Champions League than the 23-year-old’s total of 34.
That means the former Santos youngster is averaging more than three shots per game in this season’s competition, and he is more than capable of registering at least four more efforts in what could prove to be a very open second leg.
