Andy Schooler had two winners from three selections in last week’s Premier League Best Bets on the opening weekend, and is back with his fancies ahead of matchday 2.
Premier League Best Bets: August 28th 2026
I usually pick out a team, goalscorer and prop bet in this weekly preview but I think this is a good time to think outside the box a little. Certain things get spotted in the first week of a season, things which won’t necessarily have been factored into the markets by the bookmakers (and their data suppliers). For example, Marc Guehi played in midfield last week for Manchester City, who head to his old club Crystal Palace on Friday. You probably already know that he scored but he was also close to an assist.
Premier League Best Bets: Tottenham v Newcastle (Sat, 1730)
He ended with four touches in the opposition box and made four passes into the final third. Yes, City have signed Morocco World Cup star Ayyoub Bouaddi this week to play that role but I do wonder if he’ll be thrown straight into the team. There must be a chance the teenager is introduced from the bench and that Guehi gets another run-out there. If so, 10.36 for an assist is too big.
However, in the here and now, I can’t be sure of where Guehi will play so I’m instead going to play Yoane Wissa in the same market. He was deployed in the number 10 role by Newcastle last week and duly delivered an assist in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool. The Magpies played well and will have felt they did enough to win. They should certainly head to Tottenham confident of getting a result. Spurs were awful at Brentford last week and while they’ve since opened the chequebook once again, you have to think it’s going to take Roberto de Zerbi a few games to gel his raft of new players.
Newcastle should cause their defence problems and remember Spurs had all sorts of problems at home last season, winning just three games and losing 10. I doubt the hosts keep a clean sheet here and Wissa can be the key to unlocking the defence, if he plays like he did last week.
Premier League Best Bets: Bournemouth v Everton (Sat, 1500)
Getting back to ‘normal’ now with a goalscorer pick and I think it makes sense to back a player who has started the season like a train and that’s Thierno Barry. I mentioned the Everton striker for having potential in my season preview recently and he’s justified that opinion by scoring four goals in his first two games of the campaign. The former Villarreal man was in and out of the side last season, only playing 90 minutes on three occasions, and I think he’ll benefit from regular starts. His efforts so far have certainly earned him the centre-forward role for the foreseeable future and confidence should be flowing ahead of this trip south.
Marco Rose’s Bournemouth played pretty well at Manchester City in their opener but were still beaten 2-1, while they also conceded multiple goals to Augsburg, Real Betis and Mainz in pre-season. There was no clean sheet in any of their friendlies. With Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall and Iliman Ndiaye having started well too, Barry should have decent supply lines and looks decent value at 3.3 to keep his scoring run going.
Premier League Best Bets: Leeds v Brentford (Sun, 1400)
On the player props front, let’s latch straight onto Mamadou Sangare, who is already living up to the hype of ‘signing of the summer’. Brentford’s capture of the Lens midfielder for £41million was lauded when it happened and it immediately looked good business as Sangare ran the show against Spurs last weekend. Admittedly he only had the one shot in that contest but he quickly added two as a second-half substitute at Birmingham in midweek and that’s the path I want to go down.
Despite sitting pretty deep a lot of the time, Sangare does like to get forward and it’s very notable that he had 2+ shots in nine of his last 10 games for Lens. We know Brentford will have a go at Elland Road – Keith Andrews does not set his side up simply to defend – and I’d expect Sangare to be prominent again. You can get 1.92 about him having multiple shots. That’s the sort of price I doubt will be around in the weeks to come so take it now.
