The European Championships are a tournament that began in 1960 and pits Europe’s best 24 football teams together to see who will be crowned the champion of the continent. The qualified teams are placed into six groups of four, with each team playing each other in the pool. In terms of the Euro 2024 Schedule, the top two in each group and the best four third-placed teams advance to the round of 16 with a knockout format then ultimately determining the eventual winner.

Who is playing at Euro 2024?
There are 24 teams at this year’s European Championships. Group A contains Germany, Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland while Group B will see Spain, Croatia, Italy and Albania battling it out. Group C involves Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia and England facing off while Poland, Netherlands, Austria and France compete in Group D.
Group E sees Belgium, Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine take each other on while Turkey, Georgia, Portugal and Czechia clash in Group F. The opening match of the group stages sees Germany take on Scotland on June 14 while England’s first game is against Serbia two days later.

The first European Championships took place in 1960 with the Soviet Union beating Yugoslavia after extra-time in the final. The tournament continued as a four-team affair until 1980 when it was expanded to eight nations, with West Germany beating Belgium 2-1 in that final. The European Championships was expanded to include 16 teams from 1996 to 2012 before the tournament added another eight teams to reach the current total of 24.

Germany and Spain are the most successful teams in European Championships history, both having claimed three titles each. Spain are also the only team to ever win back-to-back editions in 2008 and 2012. Germany however have been runners-up on a further three occasions to go with their three wins, in comparison to just one losing final for Spain.

Italy are the reigning champions after beating England on penalties in the last edition of this tournament, Euro 2020, which was postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. England took an early lead at Wembley through Luke Shaw before they were pegged back by the Azzurri in the second half. An uneventful extra time period led to penalties and the visitors came out on top, winning the shootout 3-2.
