Manchester United v Aston Villa betting preview

Manchester United finally won a game of football in midweek – for the first time in 10 attempts.

The question now for Michael Carrick and co is whether they can build on that and start to climb the Premier League table, something they desperately need to do given they head into matchday 10 in 17th place, outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

You can certainly make the case for them doing so. Their second-half performance against Roma on Tuesday was impressive, and they were also the better side in the first half at Chelsea last weekend – they really should have been in front at the interval.

The problem is the second half at Stamford Bridge and the first half at Old Trafford were pretty awful. How do we know which United will turn up?

This match will likely need the better version, as Villa are certainly no mugs.

They improved after a poor start, winning six of seven, although they head into this one without a win in their last three in all competitions.

However, I’m not particularly put off by that mini-run. They changed virtually the entire team for their League Cup defeat at Bournemouth, were the better side against Fulham last week (and probably would have won had John McGinn’s penalty gone in instead of hitting the bar), while they were competitive for long periods against Barcelona in midweek – losing there is hardly a disgrace.

Nicolas Jackson remains in fine form – he has seven goals in his last eight appearances – and I’m sure he’s going to offer a serious threat to a United backline which has looked porous all season.

The Red Devils have kept just one clean sheet to date (against Azerbaijan’s Sabah) and on home soil have conceded multiple goals in four of their seven matches.

I therefore cannot trust United at even money here and, despite a poor record in this fixture, Villa are surely the better bet at virtually twice the price.

An alternative is to back Villa to score 2+ goals at 2.15, although you’d like to think that would be enough for them to win the match – I’ll take the bigger price.

Manchester United v Aston Villa player betting tips

In the player props markets, Jackson is 2.6 to add another goal to his tally. For United, Bryan Mbeumo has scored in four of his last eight in the Premier League and is a 2.5 shot.

However, I prefer to head to the shots markets, where Emi Buendia is at 2.3 to have three or more.

The Argentine has been an eye-catcher of late – I’ve mentioned him in previous columns – and has now landed this bet in four of his last six starts. He managed four or more shots in three of those matches.

Buendia is not afraid to shoot from distance, and I can see his runs from deep causing some issues for a home defence which is far from watertight.
