With just 10 weeks of the season left, the chase for The EFL Play-Offs in the Championship, League One and League Two is gradually heating up.
EFL Play-Offs 2025: Huge Climax to The Season
The EFL can often be unpredictable but even more so at this time of year, with games at this stage of the season having a huge impact at both ends of the table. In this article, we look at the play-off picture across all three leagues and pick out the likely contenders to battle it out for promotion.
EFL Play-Offs: The Championship
A lot of the talk in the second tier has been about the four-way battle for automatic promotion, with Leeds United, Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland hoping to secure a spot in the top two. Two of those teams will have to settle for play-off spots, leaving around 10 teams competing for the remaining two places. West Brom and Blackburn currently fill those two spots, but the fight for fifth and sixth looks likely to go to the wire, similarly to the race for the top two.
There are just seven points separating the fifth-placed Baggies from 14th-placed QPR, with just 12 games remaining for most of the Championship team. Coventry City are just a point and place outside the top six, having won five of the last six matches, while Norwich City have lost just one of their last six in the league. Bristol City, Watford, Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough look like the other teams in contention.
EFL Play-Offs: League One
It’s looking like a three-way tussle between Birmingham City, Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham for the two automatic promotion places in League One. There look to be another seven teams in the running for the other three play-off places, which are currently occupied by Stockport County, Huddersfield Town and Leyton Orient.
Charlton Athletic and Bolton Wanderers are level on points with The O’s, with Richie Wellens’ men ahead on goal difference. Reading are unbeaten in their last five, leaving them just three points outside of the play-off zone, while Barnsley have seven points to make up if they are to stand a chance of reaching Wembley.
EFL Play-Offs League Two
No fewer than eight teams will still feel like they can seal automatic promotion from League Two, with leaders Walsall eight points clear. Doncaster Rovers and AFC Wimbledon make up the other top three, who will go straight into League One, but they have several other teams biting at their heels.
There are just six points between second-placed Doncaster Rovers and Crewe Alexandra, who are sat in seventh with 52 points. Four other teams – Grimsby Town, Salford City, Bromley and Cheltenham Town – are outside the top seven, but still have realistic chances of making the play-offs.
Key EFL Play-Offs Play-Off Dates
The final day of the Championship, League One and League Two regular seasons all take place on Saturday, May 3rd. The play-off semi-finals start a week later, with the winners of the two-legged encounters meeting in the final at Wembley. All three Wembley finals will be played over the May Bank Holiday Weekend from the 24th to the 26th.
