International Football Tips: Weekend Best Bets, September 6th 2024

international football tips

Countries take centre stage this weekend, with countries across the globe looking to get their Nations League, AFCON and World Cup qualifying campaigns off to a strong start and we have international football tips across all continents. Our picks for the weekend fixtures focus on three Nations League ties as Northern Ireland travel to Bulgaria, Portugal host Scotland and Georgia take on the Czech Republic for the second time in four internationals.

International Football Tips: Green and White Army

Many were expecting Northern Ireland to struggle at home to Luxembourg in their Nations League C3 opener but Michael O’Neill’s men produced an emphatic attacking display and this should give them confidence to take all three points in Bulgaria on Sunday.

First-half strikes from Paddy McNair and Daniel Ballard ultimately secured the three points for Northern Ireland to go top of their group, and that result also improved their impressive recent run of just one defeat from their last six matches, a streak which includes four victories.

Bulgaria held Belarus to a goalless draw in Minsk – despite playing the final 17 minutes with 10 men after Filip Krastev’s dismissal – and the stalemate extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.

However, the Lions have won just once in that run and their inability to turn one point into three is going to hamper their chances. With Norn Iron netting at least twice in each of their last two, they could have the firepower to pip Bulgaria to the points.

International Football Tips: Purring Portugal

Scotland began life in League A with a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at home to Poland – thanks to a 97th-minute penalty from Nicola Zalewski – and life for Steve Clarke’s men does not get any easier as they travel to Lisbon to face Portugal.

Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 in their Nations League opener – with 39-year-old striker Cristiano Ronaldo netting his 900th career goal – to lay down a statement of intent for group glory, while the Lusos also have previous in this tournament as they were the inaugural winners back in 2019.

Scotland have now won just one of their last 13 fixtures and they could be on the receiving end of a high-scoring defeat in this encounter. Four of Portugal’s last seven home matches prior to the European Championships saw the hosts win with over 3.5 goals in the match and a similar result looks a tempting prospect in this one.

International Football Tips: Stalemate Likely

Georgia and the Czech Republic faced off in a highly-entertaining 1-1 draw in Group F at the European Championships this summer and another close match could be in store on Saturday.

The Crusaders have lost just one of their last 13 matches in front of their own fans, while the visitors have lost just one of their last seven on the road.  With both sides in decent form, there could be very little to separate the two this weekend and another draw looks appealing.
