Scotland v Poland 2024: Super Scots Primed for Hampden Shock

Scotland v Poland

The Tartan Army have been drawn alongside Croatia, Portugal and Poland in Group A1 of the UEFA Nations League and Steve Clarke’s side start with Thursday’s Hampden Park clash between Scotland v Poland. The Scots will hope to put a disappointing Euro 2024 effort behind them during this Nations League campaign, while Poland will also be aiming for an improvement following their group-stage exit in Germany.

Scotland v Poland : Scots Dangerous

Scotland aren’t blessed with explosive attacking talent, or a prolific goalscorer on the international stage, but the Tartan Army have the quality and experience to control the game from the middle of the park.  Steve Clarke can call on John McGinn, Scott McTominey and Billy Gilmour in central areas and Scotland are pretty solid at the back as well, with Andy Robertson and Ryan Porteous good performers.

Che Adams has pulled out of the squad for the matches against Poland and Portugal, which does leave Scotland a little short in attack, but prolific Scottish Premiership striker Lawrence Shankland may get a well-deserved start in Clarke’s forward line.  It’s clear where Scotland’s strengths lie and Clarke will no doubt set the Tartan Army up to be difficult to beat at Hampden on Thursday evening.

Poland were able to find the net in each of their three Euro 2024 matches, but goals against France and Austria came from only six shots on target, while the Eagles failed to score at all in their European Championship play-off with Wales.  Michał Probierz’s men notched only 10 goals in eight Euro 2024 qualifying matches, and while the Eagles can call upon Robert Lewandowski in attack, Poland are not a free-scoring side.  Backing under 1.5 goals at 2.75 could be the way to play Thursday’s Hampden Park clash.

Scotland v Poland: Cautious Start

The Nations League is a worthwhile tournament, but motivation isn’t likely to be as high as it was for these sides at the Euros. It is likely that Thursday’s clash at Hampden may take a while to warm up and the first-half could be a cagey affair. Four of Scotland’s last five matches have been level at half-time and of those four, only one featured goals before the break.  A small play on a draw and under 1.5 goals at half-time could also pay dividends when the Tartan Army welcome Poland to Glasgow.
