The final day of York’s Ebor meeting headlines the racing live on ITV, and we have three Saturday Racing Tips from The Knavesmire and Goodwood where the Gp 2 Celebration Mile is the feature. Here we look at some of the major races on Saturday’s ITV cards and attempt to point you in the direction of a few winners.
Saturday Racing Tips: Royalty Bay (2.05 Goodwood)
There are several promising youngsters in this line-up, but not many of these fillies have any form on soft ground and, with up to 20mm of rain forecast, the going could prove decisive. The one who is proven with cut in the ground is Royalty Bay (2.05) and she is fancied to cash in. John and Sean Quinn were among the winners at York this week and Royalty Bay has recorded form figures reading 112 on going with soft in the description, so these conditions should be ideal.
Royalty Bay has steadily progressive form and produced a career-best effort when second in a Group 3 at Deauville last month. She was beaten only a short-neck by the unbeaten winner Angeal and the front three pulled nicely clear of the rest. That was on good to soft ground. That form sets the standard and Royalty Bay is open to plenty of further improvement, so should make her presence felt over this 7f trip that suits her well.
Saturday Racing Tips: Spaceport (2.25 York)
There are several tough and genuine three-year-old stayers in this line-up, but there won’t be many more resolute than Spaceport (2.25) and he is fancied to take another big step forward. Spaceport had useful form over 1m4f, including a hard-fought victory at Leicester in June, but he improved significantly when upped to this 1m6f trip for the first time at Sandown last month.
There was a lot to like about the way that Spaceport saw off his rivals from the front, recording an impressive time for the grade, and he powered through the finishing line full of running. Not many horses come up the Sandown hill as well as Spaceport did that day and a 7lb rise in the weights might not be enough to stop him following up, even in this stronger-looking race. He handles any ground and remains unexposed over staying trips, so further progress looks likely from Spaceport, and he holds outstanding claims on what he has already achieved anyway.
Saturday Racing Tips: Poker Face (2.40 Goodwood)
The rain should turn the tables in favour of the soft-ground horses in this Group 2 and the best of them is Poker Face, who is fancied to bounce back from a couple of disappointing efforts. Poker Face has found the ground too quick on his last two starts and it’s easy to forgive him a heavy defeat in the Lockinge at Newbury two starts ago. Conditions were even faster at Royal Ascot last time and the selection didn’t show his form, being pulled up by James Doyle late on.
He is better judged on his previous efforts on softer ground and among them was a second behind the dual subsequent Group 1 winner Charyn, giving him 3lb, at Sandown in April. He was also twice a winner on going with soft in the description last year, including in a Group 2. That proves he is up to this level and there is every chance that he can bounce back to his best form now that he has his favoured conditions.
