The Open Championship 2024: Best Bets at Royal Troon

The Open Championship 2024

The world’s best golfers have their final chance to get their hands on a Major in 2024 when play starts at The Open Championship 2024 at Royal Troon in Scotland on Thursday. As ever, there are not just markets for who will lift the Claret Jug at the Ayrshire course on Sunday, with alternative options including a series of match bets between pairings over the course of 72 holes. We have three such bets that are worth considering before play starts early on Thursday morning.

The Open Championship 2024: Trust on Tommy

Tommy Fleetwood grew up on the links courses of Southport and has always had strong Open Championship credentials, so the Englishman, who is still yet to win on the PGA Tour, could enjoy an excellent week in Ayrshire. He has posted four top-12 finishes in the British Major, coming second behind Shane Lowry at Royal Portrush in 2019, fourth three years later and 10th 12 months ago at Royal Liverpool after starting with a 66.

It could be worth backing him at 1.76 to get the better of former world number one Jon Rahm, who has not been going through the best of times since defecting to the LIV Tour. The Spaniard is yet to win on the breakaway circuit and has often cast an unhappy figure. His second place last year was mainly down to one round of 63, as his other three efforts were far less spectacular, and he could prove vulnerable at Troon.

The Open Championship 2024: Lovely Louis

Louis Oosthuizen already knows what it is like to get his hands on the Claret Jug having won at St Andrews 14 years ago, and he then lost in a play-off to Zach Johnson at the same venue five years later. The South African has had his injury issues, but the less strenuous LIV calendar looks to have been beneficial. He has posted three second-placed finishes this year and was fourth in his last outing in Valderrama in Spain.

At 1.51, expect him to finish higher up the leaderboard than New Zealand’s Ryan Fox, who has generally been struggling since making the transition to the PGA Tour from the DP World Tour. While he was 16th at the 2019 Open, he has finished well down the pecking order in his other five efforts and may well do so again.

The Open Championship 2024: Reliable Xander

It is only a couple of months since Xander Schauffele collected his first Major triumph at the US PGA Championship and many people fancy he will be able to add to that at Troon this week. The consistent Olympic champion has finished in the top 20 in each of his last nine Majors and was second in this in 2018 when he went into the final round tied for the lead at Carnoustie, only to lose out to Francesco Molinari by two shots.

With eight top-10s in his last 13 tournaments, he is one of the world’s most consistent players and may just have too much for Swedish starlet Ludvig Aberg at 1.83. Aberg will surely have his own big days to come, but he will have to deal with a lot of hype on his Open debut this week and this could become part of the learning process.
