There’s no World Number One this week at The Rocket Mortgage Classic 2024, and a wide-open field, which has a history of throwing up the odd longshot at a big price. World number one Scottie Scheffler was the star of the show once again last week, claiming a play-off victory at the Travelers Championship, but he and plenty of the other big guns will be putting their feet up this week following the final PGA Tour signature event of 2024.
So with no short-priced favourite in this week’s tournament, we should see a competitive betting heat at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. Tom Kim, who was beaten by Scheffler in extra-time on Sunday heads the market, but in his ninth straight week of action, there could be others that appeal and we have scoured the field and form to come up with three worthwhile bets on this week’s get-together.
Rocket Mortgage Classic 2024: Young Primed
As the game’s leading lights take a break, there may be no better time for Cameron Young, who is available to back at 12.60 to finally get himself a first PGA Tour success after posting seven runner-up finishes. He is very much the nearly-man on tour and one of those second places came at Detroit Golf Club two years ago when Tony Finau proved the only player stronger than the American, who was also runner-up at The Open in 2022.
So the course form is there and so are the recent results, as he was superb at TPC River Highlands last week. He made a sluggish start with a 72, but he stormed through the field over the weekend to finish ninth in an effort that included a memorable 59 in the third round. So confidence is not going to be an issue at another track where scoring is expected to be low this week and if he plays anything like as well in Michigan, then it could be a memorable week.
Rocket Mortgage Classic 2024: Pendrith’s Pro Putting
Another player who was second when Finau won in 2022 was Taylor Pendrith and the signs are strong that the Canadian, who is available at 22.90, could go one better this year. In a tournament where low scores are anticipated, strong putting can make all the difference and Pendrith is right up there with the game’s best blade operators.
He has been the fifth-best putter on tour this year and with form figures of 10-MC-21-33-16-23, the man who won the CJ Cup in May can rise to the top with so many big names away.
Rocket Mortgage Classic 2024: Brilliant Bhatia
Akshay Bhatia, who can be backed at 16.60, missed the cut on his course debut in Detroit last year, but the 22-year-old has made rapid improvements, having already won the Texas Open this year.
He is a solid putter and will have been encouraged by some strong recent results, which have seen him finish 22nd at The Memorial, 16th in the US Open and then fifth in last week’s Travelers Championship.
