After two winners from two bets in England’s last game at the T20 World Cup 2024, Andy Schooler is back to preview their must-win clash with Oman on Thursday.
T20 World Cup 2024: England v Oman
Venue: Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua
Date/Time: Thursday June 13, 2000 BST
TV: Sky Sports Cricket and Main Event
After Saturday’s defeat to Australia, the pressure is well and truly on England at the T20 World Cup 2024. The defending champions know that even winning their final two group games may not be enough to qualify for the next stage, while they will certainly be out if they lose to Oman.
Of course, that shouldn’t happen but Jos Buttler’s side haven’t looked good at any stage so far and it would be no surprise to see a couple of changes for this clash – Reece Topley could well come into the attack. Oman were never likely to qualify but they are officially already out of contention having lost three out of three so far.
They weren’t hammered by Australia but never looked like winning, losing by 39 runs in the end, but disappointed against Scotland last time out here in Antigua. They lost by seven wickets as Scotland chased down 151 with a massive 41 balls to spare.
T20 World Cup 2024: Runs to Flow
Something similar here would suit England nicely – there’s a good chance qualification is going to come down to net run rate for them – and you’d imagine their powerful batting line-up will be on the attack from the off whether they bat first or second. Given the circumstances, I think it may well be worth taking a punt on a century being scored in this match.
The Oman bowlers really struggled to contain Scotland and you have to worry about them against this England line-up. Brandon McMullen made 61 off 31 balls here the other day and had he been allowed to bat for the remaining seven overs, there’s every chance he’d have hit three figures. Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis scored 67 off 36 for Australia against Oman back in Barbados.
The ball seems to be coming onto the bat a bit better in Antigua and if one of England’s top three gets off to a flier here, they could go big. Phil Salt seems the most likely – he scored two tons in the West Indies during December’s T20I series. We profited by backing the opener the other day and I’m again happy to go over his total runs line which this time is set only marginally higher at 24.5.
T20 World Cup 2024: Khan Do Spirit
Since the last T20 World Cup, he’s managed to pass this mark in nine of his 11 T20I innings so keep him on side. Finally, let’s take another long shot in the Oman top-bat market. Ayaan Khan may bat in the middle order but with his colleagues having regularly failed above him, he’s had opportunities to bat for a decent length of time in the tournament so far.
He won this market when scoring 36 against the Aussies and also hit an unbeaten 41 against Scotland. It’s not hard to envisage Oman losing cheap, early wickets and the left-hander could well get another good chance to land the top-bat honours at a tasty price of 8.75.
