There are now less than a handful of games left in The Championship 2023/2024 season and there’s still plenty to play for at both ends of the table in what promises to be a chaotic few weeks.
Leicester City, Leeds United and Southampton, all three teams that were relegated last season from the Premier League, have the chance to earn promotion, while at the bottom, Rotherham United have already had their relegation confirmed and they will be playing in League One next season.
Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town all have games in hand to try and catch up on, and in typical Championship fashion, all three teams are chasing promotion before the end of May.
Automatic Promotion
The race for automatic promotion is seemingly down to three teams, but Leicester’s 5-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday all but ensured that the Foxes will be promoted. Enzo Maresca’s side need to win one of their remaining two matches against Preston or Blackburn to return to the Premier League, while the Saints can no longer finish in the top two barring a mathematical miracle.
Leicester are as short as 1.05 to win the league title, while Ipswich are 11.90, despite sitting in third. Leeds are 14.60 with kwiff to lift the crown, and while the Whites have a one-point advantage over Ipswich, they have played one game more.
The Play-Offs
The race for the top six is also still on and with just a few weeks left of the campaign, there are still four teams fighting to secure their place in the play-offs. Leicester, Leeds, Ipswich and Southampton are already guaranteed their play-off spots if they miss out on automatic promotion, while West Brom, Norwich, Hull and Coventry can still mathematically finish amongst the top six.
As it stands, Hull and Coventry would miss out, but they can cut the gap with their games in hand, and it promises to be a tense finish for those in and around the play-off spots. In terms of odds for promotion, Leeds are 1.20 to achieve it, closely followed by Ipswich at 1.32. Russell Martin’s Southampton are 2.20 with kwiff to go up, West Brom are 5.85, while David Wagner’s Norwich are 6.25 to return to the top flight. Hull and Coventry are considered outsiders at 66.00 and 100.00, respectively.
Relegation
With Rotherham already relegated, there are only two more spots to try and avoid at the wrong end of the division. Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City occupy them for now, and it is the Terriers that look in more trouble, as they are two points behind the Blues on 44 points.
Sheffield Wednesday are just outside the drop zone on 47 points, while Plymouth are one place and one point better off. The likes of Blackburn, QPR and Stoke City could all be dragged back into the battle but they would need to pick up no more points, while Birmingham and Huddersfield would need to win both of their remaining games.
Huddersfield are 1.03 to drop into League One, with Birmingham 1.21. Wednesday are 1.28 to return to the third tier, but odds of 2.85 with kwiff suggest that Plymouth may escape the drop.
