The first golf Major of the year gets underway on Thursday, as the world’s top players head to Augusta to try and win the famous Green Jacket at The Masters 2024. Jon Rahm is the defending champion and the Spaniard’s defection to LIV Golf is one of the main talking points heading into this year’s tournament.
We have scoured the field and the form to bring you three tips for this week’s tournament, for which world number one Scottie Scheffler heads the betting.
Scheffler is rightly a short favourite
Last year’s final leaderboard highlighted how important previous success at Augusta can be when it comes to challenging for the title. Three of the top six were previous Green Jacket winners – Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed – and all three hadn’t been in great form leading up to the tournament.
Scottie Scheffler is not only a former Masters champion – claiming the 2022 title – but is also flying in terms of form this season. The standard of the American’s recent golf has made him the shortest pre-tournament Masters favourite since Tiger Woods, with Scheffler available to win at 4.00 with kwiff.
It is hard to make a case for that price being too short, when you consider what he has shown in recent weeks and his Augusta record. In six tournaments since the start of February, the man from New Jersey has a formline that reads T6-T3-T10-1-1-T2. Add to that his four finishes at the Masters of T19-T18-1-T10 and he clearly is the man to beat this week.
In-form Fitzpatrick can head European challenge
Three of the last eight Masters champions have been European and Matt Fitzpatrick will look to add his name to that list this week. The 2022 US Open champion has a decent record at Augusta National, with two top-10s and two top-25 finishes to his name. One of those top-10s came last year, while his recent form suggests he will head to Georgia full of confidence this time around.
Fitzpatrick finished fifth at last month’s Players Championship, before recording a T10 spot at last week’s Valero Texas Open. The man from Sheffield has shown he can handle the big occasion and is 25.40 with kwiff to follow in the footsteps of Danny Willett and Nick Faldo as an English winner.
Fowler’s Augusta record makes him a contender
There are not many current golfers with a better Augusta record, without winning the event, than Rickie Fowler. The 35-year-old has three top-10s to his name and has only finished outside the top-38 on one of his 10 previous Masters appearances.
This is Fowler’s first Masters since 2021 after he suffered a drop down the world rankings, but he has shown some good signs in recent months. Fowler leads the PGA Tour in consecutive sand saves and ranks inside the top-25 for approaches from 75-100 yards – his short game will be key to a good week. The American, who finished as runner-up to Reed in 2018, is 7.95 with kwiff to finish in the top-10 this week.
