Liverpool v Arsenal betting preview

Sunday’s sole Premier League game offers Liverpool the chance to force themselves into the title race.

Like Arsenal, they’ve lost just once so far this season but too many draws mean they head into this contest six points behind the champions and joint leaders.

And there are reasons for home optimism.

Arsenal have a poor record at Anfield – their last victory here came back in 2012. They’ve failed to win in their last 16 visits.

The Gunners also arrive with problems in attack, notably wide areas where Bukayo Saka and Christos Tzolis are currently injured and Noni Madueke is a doubt. In addition, it’s fair to say that neither Kai Havertz nor Viktor Gyokeres has been setting the world on fire so far this season.

In contrast, Liverpool’s attack is beginning to click. Alexander Isak has moved smoothly onto six Premier League goals – only Erling Haaland has more. Cody Gakpo is playing well, while Bradley Barcola appears to be settling into new surroundings now.

Improvement is also being seen at the back where Jeremy Jacquet looks a real upgrade at the heart of the defence, while Ronald Araujo has already won over the Reds’ fans with a series of impressive displays, mainly at right-back which has long been a problem area.

Liverpool’s midfield is my biggest concern – they’ve been overrun there at times this season but the potential return of Dominik Szoboszlai is a boost. He scored the winner in this fixture last season.

That match highlighted Arsenal’s deep-rooted, safety-first approach to big games and I’d expect something similar again here.

Mikel Arteta knows he can rely on his strong defensive unit, even if it is without William Saliba, and one suspects he’d be far from disappointed with a draw from this tricky trip.

The Gunners didn’t manage that here last season though and Liverpool’s price does look tempting given the current circumstances of both sides.

They are 2.75 to win the game but I’ll take them in the draw-no-bet market where they are 1.96 underdogs.

Liverpool v Arsenal: Under 2.5 goals betting tip

The other bet I like is going low on goals.

There was just one goal scored across the sides’ two meetings last season – and that was a world-class free kick from the aforementioned Szoboszlai.

The total expected goals figures were 1.01 here at Anfield and just 0.88 at the Emirates.

Last season’s Premier League games between Liverpool & Arsenal Total xG
At Anfield (Liverpool 1-0 Arsenal) 1.01
At Emirates Stadium (Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool) 0.88

With both defences looking pretty strong right now, under 2.5 goals looks a decent bet as the outsider of the two options.

Despite an upward goals trend in the Premier League in recent times, that has landed in four of Arsenal’s eight games this season and four of Liverpool’s last six.

Ronald Araujo: A bigger-priced alternative?

I’m struggling for a big-priced fancy this week but I will mention Ronald Araujo again, this time for his efforts going forward.

He’s not the most natural of attacking full-backs but he has got into some good positions down the right in recent games, contributing both shots and balls into the box.

The Uruguayan has managed eight shots in his last five games in all competitions (he’s 1.5 for another on Sunday).

But for those looking for that big price, perhaps the 10.43 about Araujo having an assist is for you.

He’s managed just the one so far but, like I say, he’s surged into some good positions and has got balls into the box – see last week’s opening goal against Brighton which came from his cross.

For me, it’s probably a bet for another day against different opponents given I’m not expecting too many goals, but if you take the different opinion, you could do worse than backing Araujo to assist.
