Andy Schooler’s weekly ATP tennis column is back with three first-round betting tips for Basel and Vienna.
All odds listed were correct at the time of writing but subject to change.
ATP Basel betting tips
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard v Arthur Fils
This is match where the gap in price just looks too large.
It has, admittedly, been a disappointing season for Mpetshi Perricard, who has said he has struggled mentally.
However, circumstances may make him a bet in this one in Basel.
Confidence should be up after Mpetshi Perricard came through qualifying, slamming down 46 aces in his two matches.
And he’s also won both previous meetings against his French compatriot, albeit neither came at tour level.
Fils has enjoyed a much better season, although things didn’t go to plan in Brussels last week where he only beat Alex Michelsen before losing to Jan-Lennard Struff.
He’s now suffered three defeats in his last five matches.
Serve will again likely dominate this encounter but Mpetshi Perricard’s booming delivery has the potential to edge a tie-break or two and thus makes his odds of close to 5.0 worth a poke.

| Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to beat Arthur Fils | 4.75 |
Jerome Kym v Arthur Rinderknech
Rinderknech is the proven player here yet he’s also the underdog.
The reason is he will be playing for the first time in a month after tearing an abdominal muscle in Beijing.
That will be off-putting for many and it’s certainly something I’m concerned about.
Yet he’ll surely only play if the injury is properly healed – it will be hard to serve properly if his ab is still giving him grief, especially with his home Masters event to come next week.
And if he is fully fit, Rinderknech is the better player here, as his ranking of 61st shows. Kym is outside the top 200 and only here due to a wild card for, basically, being Swiss.
At 6ft 6in, he does possess a strong serve but he’s also not used to playing top-100 players like Rinderknech – this will be just his fourth such match this season, although he did beat world number 98 Toby Samuel last month.
Rinderknech’s serve is also a serious weapon and, as long as he’s fully fit, that shot should see him through this.
The French star hasn’t lost to anyone ranked as low as Kym since May 2024 and while the price won’t be for everyone given the circumstances, he makes my coupon as the third and final selection.

|---|---|
| Arthur Rinderknech to beat Jerome Kym | 1.92 |

ATP Vienna
Tallon Griekspoor v Brandon Nakashima
I’m always on the hunt for value in this column and thought I’d found some when Arthur Fery was up at 2.15 to beat fellow Briton Jacob Fearnley.
However, in the time it’s taken from researching to writing things up, Fery has been cut into joint favourite – quite a swing.
Clearly the price was wrong, although sadly it’s been corrected. However, there is another one I like the look of and that’s Griekspoor in this contest.
The Dutchman played very well in Brussels last week to capture the title and he’s due to get more medium-fast conditions in Vienna, which should suit his serve-dominated game.
He’s often been a threat indoors, certainly more so than Nakashima, whose poor indoor record I mentioned last week, albeit in a losing cause.
I am prepared to take the American on again though, given Griekspoor is chalked up at 2.55.
Given his form, plus the fact he beat Nakashima here 7-6 6-1 12 months ago, Griekspoor looks overpriced.
This should be a serve-dominated contest, one which could well be decided by a handful of key points. That could play into the hands of the man who has managed to win some tight matches over the past week.
I get that he’s got the quick turnaround to make after Brussels but these shouldn’t be vastly different conditions so I’m happy to play at the price.
