Cathryn Fry previews Sunday’s Munster National at Limerick, where Stumptown heads a competitive field of staying chasers. With testing ground, a €100,000 prize fund and several well-handicapped challengers, Cathryn assesses the leading contenders and reveals her three selections.

Munster National 2026: Race preview

The Munster National promises to be one of the most revealing staying handicaps of the early jumps season, with established Grade 1-winning chaser Stumptown heading a competitive field that includes several horses arriving off encouraging recent performances.

Run over three miles on yielding to heavy ground, the €100,000 contest presents a different challenge to a straightforward test of class. The 19-runner field contains seasoned campaigners with proven staying power, progressive chasers looking to establish themselves at a higher level and several runners whose handicap marks offer grounds for optimism.

Stumptown is entitled to considerable respect, but his burden of 11st 12lb leaves the door open for challengers carrying less weight. The likes of Anyway, Bossofthebrownies and Kings Hill all have something to recommend them, while the presence of experienced course performers makes this a particularly interesting betting puzzle.

Munster National 2026: Leading contenders

Horse Age Trainer Weight OR
Stumptown 9 Gavin Cromwell 11st 12lb 149
Anyway 8 David Kenneth Budds 11st 2lb 139
Bossofthebrownies 7 Mouse Morris 11st 2lb 139
Kings Hill 7 Paul John Gilligan 10st 12lb 135
French Dynamite 11 Emmet McNamara 11st 9lb 146

Stumptown

Class act. The highest-rated runner brings the strongest established credentials to the race. Stumptown has built an impressive reputation as a staying chaser, with eight wins from 26 career starts listed in his published record. His previous exploits over marathon distances demonstrate that stamina is unlikely to be an issue.

The concern is the handicap. He must concede weight to every rival, and carrying 11st 12lb over three miles against 18 opponents leaves little margin for error. His recent form figures also include a pulled-up effort, so his preparation and current condition merit scrutiny.

On the positive side, he has the class to travel strongly through the race and can put pressure on his rivals before the final fences. If he arrives in peak condition, he could prove difficult to pass. However, at the weights, he is not an automatic selection.

Anyway

Anyway enters the race after winning his latest start, an important positive in a handicap of this nature. His recent sequence has been inconsistent, but the return to winning ways provides evidence that he remains capable of producing a competitive performance. He is rated 139, 10lb below Stumptown, and receives 10lb from the favourite’s allotted weight.

The key question is whether that latest success can be translated into a stronger assignment against more accomplished staying chasers. His previous form includes several disappointing efforts, meaning that one victory should not automatically be taken as proof of sustained improvement.

Nevertheless, he is at an appealing stage of his career, and the weight difference gives him a tangible advantage. If he settles into a good rhythm and jumps cleanly, he has the potential to remain competitive deep into the race.

Bossofthebrownies

Bossofthebrownies is one of the more intriguing horses in the field because of his age and consistency before his latest break. His published form includes a sequence of three runner-up or winning performances following an earlier victory, suggesting that he has developed into a reliable performer over fences.

At seven, he may still have scope to improve, which is an important consideration in a race where several older rivals could be close to their ceiling. His official rating of 139 puts him on the same mark as Anyway, and he also receives a useful weight concession relative to Stumptown.

The obvious reservation is the length of his absence. A return after such a break in a competitive Grade 3 handicap is demanding, particularly if the pace is strong from the outset. His ability to retain his previous form will be central to his chances.

Kings Hill

Kings Hill is another relatively young contender who could benefit from the conditions of this handicap. He has won over fences and has demonstrated that he can compete effectively at Limerick, giving him a useful foundation for this assignment. His recent record contains a mixture of positive performances and a disappointing latest effort.

His mark of 135 leaves him 14lb below Stumptown, while his weight of 10st 12lb should help if the race develops into a sustained battle from the home turn. The question is whether he possesses the consistency required to compete against this depth of opposition. A clean round and a return to his better form would put him in the picture, but the latest defeat means he needs to re-establish confidence.

French Dynamite

French Dynamite brings valuable experience and a strong rating to the contest. His official mark of 146 places him just 3lb below Stumptown, and he has previously performed well at Limerick over the course and distance. That familiarity is a positive in a race where jumping accuracy and an understanding of the track can prove decisive.

The concern is his age and the amount of weight he must carry. At 11, he is an experienced campaigner rather than an obvious improver, and his recent form includes a pulled-up effort. He must demonstrate that he can still produce his best when faced with a demanding three-mile handicap.

If he settles and jumps well, his class could take him a long way. However, he has less room for error than the lighter-weighted runners.

Munster National: The remainder of the field

The depth of the race is illustrated by the number of runners with either previous course form or the potential to take advantage of a lower handicap mark.

Horse Weight OR Cathryn’s assessment
Look To The West 10st 11lb 134 A course winner with the benefit of a favourable weight relative to the principals. However, her recent form includes falls and a disappointing latest effort. She needs to put those setbacks behind her, but her course experience gives her some appeal if she can rediscover her earlier ability.
Weveallbeencaught 10st 10lb 133 Has previously shown sufficient ability to be competitive in staying handicaps, but his recent record is patchy. His stamina is an asset, though he needs to produce a considerably stronger performance than his latest sequence suggests.
Mint Boy 10st 9lb 132 Gavin Cromwell’s runner has the advantage of a lighter weight, but his recent form contains several unconvincing efforts. He needs to improve on what he has shown lately to feature prominently in a race of this quality.
Uhavemeinstitches 10st 8lb 131 One of the younger runners in the field, she has demonstrated useful ability and possesses previous course-and-distance credentials. Her recent form is mixed, but her age and lighter burden make her an interesting outsider if she can put together a clean round. Plenty of stamina on the dam side, Harry Cobden takes the ride.
Sportinthepark 10st 7lb 130 Noel Meade’s seven-year-old has shown ability in the past, but recent efforts raise questions about his current level. His mark gives him a chance if he returns to form, although there is a greater leap of faith involved than with the leading contenders.
Iceberg Theory 10st 4lb 127 A seven-year-old with a useful weight and evidence of considerable ability in his better performances. His recent form includes a pulled-up effort, which is a concern, but he is sufficiently well treated on his peak figures to warrant attention if conditions and fitness are in his favour.
Littlefoot 10st 4lb 127 Has shown he can win over fences, but his more recent efforts have been disappointing. The handicap gives him a theoretical opportunity, yet he must prove that he is capable of producing his better form again before he can be strongly recommended.
Meet And Greet 10st 4lb 127 A course winner with plenty of experience, but now a ten-year-old whose recent form has been inconsistent. He receives a useful weight concession, although he needs to show that he can still compete with younger and potentially improving rivals.
Will Do 10st 4lb 127 Gordon Elliott’s runner has a low weight and produced a more encouraging effort on his latest start after a difficult spell. That recent third offers some hope, but he needs to build on it substantially to become a serious threat in this company.
A Wave Of The Sea 10st 1lb 124 An experienced ten-year-old who arrives after a recent victory, a welcome indication of current wellbeing. He is better treated at the weights than several of the principals and has previously shown an ability to compete in handicaps. The question is whether he can sustain that improvement against stronger opposition over three miles. Will feel like he’s running loose with his light weight and Conor O’Dwyer’s claim.
Hermino AA 10st 122 Receives a significant weight concession, which is the principal attraction. His recent form has tailed off, however, and he needs to demonstrate that the handicap mark gives him a genuine opportunity rather than simply reflecting his previous best performances.
