13:15 Newmarket – Betway British EBF Rosemary Stakes 1m
It’s entirely possible Arisaig will bounce back to form after a couple of pretty moderate efforts at Pontefract and Ascot and it is worth remembering her best effort this season came over this C&D when she humped a big weight to finish second in very competitive handicap back in April, but that Ascot effort last time was not a good one and it’s not an easy one to forgive, either.
Estissa hasn’t done anything wrong this season and deserves another success. She looked an improving horse when taking a couple of all-weather contests in the spring and since switching to turf has run well in defeat, given a lot to do at Longchamp last time but coming home with a rattle to be beaten a shade over two lengths. She has a good turn of foot when on song, and can put it to good use here.
13:50 Newmarket – Princess Royal Stakes 1m4f
This is obviously a lot easier for Inis Mor but you simply can’t back a David Menuisier horse with any confidence at the moment; we’re getting on for three months since he had a winner, and that despite most of his horses looking in rude health beforehand. Something just isn’t quite firing with the yard and as such, despite this big drop in class, I have to field against her here.
I shall give Prizeland another try. Perhaps it was the extended 14f trip that just found her out at Doncaster last time, but all the same it was a solid enough run in Group 2 company and I’ll concentrate on her earlier Galtres win at York where she ran away from some useful types. She looked strong at the finish there and this track ought to suit, and I take her to bounce back to winning ways.
14:25 Newmarket – Betway Rockfel Stakes 7f
Spirited Gesture is another favourite that looks plenty short enough on the evidence we have seen so far, despite winning both her starts, as they have only been in novice company and there was nothing I saw in either win that makes me want to get involved at around the 9-4 mark here.
The case for Light Of Dawn is easier to make after her G2 win in the Prestige Fillies Stakes at Goodwood last time but at twice the price and bigger, I could see Siena Storm, fourth to Light Of Dawn that day, getting a lot closer and maybe even reversing the form. Nothing much went right for Siena Storm that day, she travelled into the race as well as anything but chalk her down as another Goodwood hard luck story, as she got no run when she needed one, lost her track position only to stay on strongly once she saw daylight. It’s worth noting she attracted plenty of support that day and went off a shorter price than Light Of Dawn; I suspect there’s very little between the two and if she’s fit and ready to go, then I like her chances at a double-figure price.
16:45 Newmarket – Betway Bet £10 Get £40 Handicap 1m1f
Runswick’s early season form looked not only solid but progressive, winning a handicap at Carlisle that’s thrown up a few winners in June, but he looked a horse in need of a break after a poor effort at Newmarket in August, weakening out of things quickly and finishing last of the six runners. He’s now had that break, coming back today after almost seven weeks off, and could easily get himself back on track, this 9f trip might be ideal the way he finished off over a mile at Carlisle. The booking of Ryan Moore catches the eye too, and there are more races in him, of that I’m convinced.
