They say you are never more than a game away from a crisis at Manchester United. So, what are we to make of a start which has seen just two of six games won (one of four in the Premier League) and one clean sheet kept? My takeaway, for what it’s worth, is that once again the board created a crazy situation for themselves by – not the first time – appointing an interim manager, seeing him do well and then basically feeling the pressure to appoint him on the back of a few months’ work. Well, he was a former player, after all.
Fulham v Man Utd: Carrick Out of his Depth
The fact is Michael Carrick’s managerial CV was not worthy of a job of this size; maybe now he’s being found out. After a week in which United lost their city derby to 10 men and then blew a 2-0 lead to crash out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Brighton, the good news is they face one of the few teams currently below them in the table. Fulham stopped their rot with a goalless draw at Anfield last weekend but that is their only point thus far as they have struggled early on under new boss Alvaro Arbeloa.
There have been some encouraging signs though, with Josh King impressing in an attacking-midfield role, while striker Gonzalo Garcia has bagged a couple of goals to respond to those who labelled him a below-par summer signing. From what I’ve seen, they have enough about them to cause United’s shaky defence problems, although going the other way they may struggle. United are second on the expected-goals metric and have taken more shots than any other side across the first four games. Fulham, meanwhile, have the third worst record when it comes to expected goals against.
Such numbers made me take a look at United to win with both teams scoring. However, 2.7 is a bit short for me – I’m simply not trusting enough of the visitors at the moment to be backing them at that price. Instead, my bets here are going to come from the shots markets. I’ve already mentioned United’s penchant for a shot this season and one of those letting fly has been the returning Marcus Rashford. The England international has landed the 3+ shots bet in three of his four starts so far this season. Fulham have struggled to contain players down their right-hand side in the early weeks – last time out at Craven Cottage, Tyrick Mitchell scored twice (from three shots), while Morgan Rogers also delivered three shots from an inside-left position back on the opening weekend. A price of 1.85 looks worth taking.
Fulham v Man Utd: Bank on Robbo
On the other side of the ball, Antonee Robinson makes appeal to have a shot at any stage given he’s even money. The USA international has now managed a shot in eight of his last nine club starts, including having two in that aforementioned Palace game. He loves to raid down the left from full-back and I’m wondering if the layers have forgotten about his attacking ability given his injury struggles of last season.
It should be remembered it was only two seasons ago that he managed 10 assists (and it was six the season before that). With this in mind, it may also be worth throwing a few beans at Robinson for an assist, too. That’s an attractive long shot given United’s defensive frailty and it should be remembered last week’s derby winner came down that same flank. This column was harshly treated on that occasion – my Gvardiol assist bet was denied as his cross took a deflection on the way – so maybe we’re due some payback…
