Andy Schooler’s Premier League Best Bets 2026/2027: MD 5 Preview
They say nothing lasts forever and you can be sure that Arsenal won’t keep on winning and winning in this season’s Premier League. Four wins from four so far has shown they are very much the team to beat again in the title race but Manchester City are still right next to them, turning up the pressure with last weekend’s victory at Old Trafford.
Premier League Best Bets: Brighton v Arsenal
Arsenal fans would have hoped that was a game in which City might have slipped up, especially once they went down to 10 men. However, this week it’s the Gunners with the tougher-looking fixture (City host Sunderland). Brighton have made a strong start to their campaign and currently lead the league for goals scored – 13 already netted in just four matches. They thrashed Coventry 5-0 last weekend and then defeated Manchester United 3-2 in midweek in the Carabao Cup. While this will be another step up, Brighton will be confidence into this contest and seem likely to have a proper go at breaking down the renowned Arsenal defence.
Pascal Gross has been excellent in midfield, with Maxime de Cuyper relishing a more forward role and new arrival Malick Yalcouye making a good early impression. Fabian Huerzler will set his side up to play the game on their terms and while Arsenal are more than capable of keeping opponents at bay, they remain without key defender Gabriel, while they could easily have lost their 100 per cent record on the road at Sunderland last week where their hosts missed a penalty at 0-0. This just looks a game which has come at the right time for Brighton and I’m prepared to back them to avoid defeat at 1.98 via the double-chance market. For the record, they are 4.4 to win the game.
Premier League Best Bets: Nottingham Forest v Coventry
When looking for this week’s goalscorer selection, I was quickly drawn to two games where the hosts are firm favourites against newly promoted opposition. I almost went back to Thierno Barry, who I put up the other week only to see him miss three great chances at Bournemouth. The Everton striker’s expected-goals figure is bettered only by Erling Haaland so far this season but he has only one actual goal to show for it which says much about his finishing. However, a home game with Ipswich may offer more chances and he’s tempting at 2.45.
The same price is offered about Liam Delap scoring for Forest at home to a Coventry side who have already shipped 10 goals in four league games – another three went into their net in the Carabao Cup in midweek. With no points and no goals, confidence must already be sapping for Frank Lampard’s men and Delap could well take advantage.
Forest’s new signing looked sharp in last week’s win at Aston Villa where he scored from distance and had another disallowed. In total, he fired off six shots and will surely offer a similar threat here. Delap struggled at Chelsea last season but he’s been given a new lease of life and may well be worth following now he’s up and running with his new club.
Premier League Best Bets: Everton v Ipswich
Despite their woeful end to the transfer window, Everton remain unbeaten across six games this season and, in theory, should like the look of this fixture which is their last before the extended international break. However, any Toffees fan will tell you that the supposedly ‘easy’ games are those they fear the most. Everton have a pretty awful record against newly promoted sides. Last season they won one of seven such fixtures (if you include an FA Cup tie) and you go back a lot further than that and find similar issues.
In short, I would never want to back them at 1.64 to win this game and, in fact, there could be some value among the Ipswich players. Step forward left-back Leif Davis, who will push into some threatening attacking areas, looking to take advantage of new arrival Ainsley Maitland-Niles possibly still not being up to speed in terms of both his fitness and his role in a Blues back four which is out-performing its expected-goals against figure considerably – only Hull have a bigger gap between their xGA and GA numbers. Davis has scored in his last two away games – at Palace and Manchester United – and has admitted that it is an area of his game he’s focusing on improving this season.
He said this week: “Scoring more goals is something I’ve pushed myself with this year. I’ve got two already and probably should have more, so hopefully I can grab as many as I can.” That should lead to him taking more shots and he managed 2+ in both of those aforementioned games. A repeat here is offered at 3.4 which seems perfectly fair. Given his goalscoring form, I also can’t resist taking a punt on Davis finding the net once again at 15.0. Let’s have a small, extra bet on that.
