Dave Massey is back ahead of Day 5 of Glorious Goodwood, giving his leading fancies ahead of another top class day of flat racing.
1:50 Goodwood – 1m6f Handicap
I have to give another chance to Sing Us A Song here.
He got a favourable mention for the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot last time out and but for some late interference, might well have held on for a place. With Daiquiri Bay winning the race, a horse I’ve been also following for some time and who had been threatening to win a good handicap (and breaking the course record in the process) I rate that form very highly. Indeed, third home Paddy The Squire confirmed it strong form when a half-length second to Sportingsilvermine in the rearranged Old Newton Cup at Newmarket on his next start, running a personal best in the process. The handicapper has left him on the same mark, which he probably had to do, but the way he shaped there suggested he still had a few pounds in hand. I like his chances here.
3:00 Goodwood – 1m6f Lillie Langtry Stakes
Tricky little race this, with many of the main protagonists probably wanting a bit more cut in the ground than they’re going to get here. As such, not a race I’m going to get hugely involved with, but I’ve thought for a while Little Dorrit is worth a go over a trip like this; a staying-on fifth in a Listed contest at Pontefract two starts ago and a similar story at Newmarket in the Aphrodite last time, sticking on well for a 2¼ length fourth when it was all over; that form leaves her well short of what some of these have achieved, and hopes are pinned on quick ground and a staying trip improving her. Shame we haven’t got the dead eight; small win and three places bet on the exchanges looks the likely scenario.
3:35 Goodwood – 6f Stewards Cup
Run Boy Run in stall 24 is my main pick. He was a paddock pick for the 5f race earlier in the week, finding it too sharp a test but ran on nicely in the closing stages, catching the eye and was maybe using it as a stepping stone for today. In fact, there’s a couple of times he’s run well after being turned around within a week, and the more I look at him, the more I think he’s got a big chance here.
Ferrous is also quite interestin. A return to turf at Hamilton last time out saw him return to form, beaten a nose by Strike Red, and as this is early closing he gets to race off the same mark here (due to go up 2lb after this). The worry is he’s on a bit of a losing run, but he’s 1-1 at Goodwood, well handicapped, potentially nicely drawn the way this week has panned out, and Jack Channon continues to be among the winners. I like his each-way chances here and 16-1 and bigger is worth taking.
