It’s good to be back at Ascot on Friday for Day 1 of their King George meeting – and tomorrow’s feature race looks like a cracking renewal. Calandagan can join one of a handful of horses to win multiple renewals and join some illustrious company with the likes of Dahlia, Swain and the brilliant filly Enable.
Hector Crouch Ascot Preview: Cut and Sew
I’ve four rides on Friday starting with Cut and Sew (2.20) in the opening 6f Novice Stakes. Ed Walker’s horses tend to improve significantly from their first race to second, and she can build on a nice debut at Goodwood when third over what looked like an inadequate trip. She was green in the early stages, before making good ground in the closing stages, and should continue to progress.
Hector Crouch Ascot Preview: Silver Dominion
Friday’s best chance of a winner looks to be the promising Silver Dominion (2.55) in the feature Pat Eddery Stakes who is bidding to build on an excellent fourth last time out in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. I rode him when he made a winning debut at Newbury, and gave me the feel of a nice horse when winning when perhaps a little unfancied on the day. He’s continued to improve and his run last time out at Newmarket is probably the strongest form in the race. He’s got a very good chance.
Hector Crouch Ascot Preview: Flying Frontier
The step up in trip should help Flying Frontier (4.05) who is back to a mile and a half for the first time in almost two years. He’s been well-tried over a mile and a quarter, running well in handicaps at Redcar and Sandown since returning from a long break. The run last time out suggested he’s ready for a step up in trip, and might go well from a pound lower mark.
Hector Crouch Ascot Preview: Paradise Walk
Paradise Walk (5.12) has taken a bit of a stroll herself in the market but is in good form and I’d expect her to go close in her bid to seal the hat-trick in the closing 5f Handicap. She took a while to break her maiden tag, winning well at Windsor and following-up subseuqnlty at Nottingham.
This is more competitive but she’s going the right way and I expect her to keep improving. Paradise Walk always did things well at home, so we were a bit puzzled why she was a bit slow to come to hand. Fillies who get on a roll can be difficult to stop when get going, so hopefully she can continue to
