Chester May Meeting 2026: Exclusive Day 3 Tips
Chester May Meeting: Great David (1:30)
Great David (1.30) is the pick here. An easy winner first time up at Nottingham last season, he followed that up with an even better effort when a C&D third to Mount Kilimanjaro in the Dee Stakes here. Further good efforts followed in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot and the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton before disappointing at Windsor in August, and he wasn’t seen again after that, suggesting he might have had a small issue. Dropping back into handicap company here, and with no trip, track or ground issues, he should go close from a decent draw.
Chester May Meeting: Chester Cup (3:05)
Two against the field, for me. Blindedbythelights (3.05) has fared well with the draw, pulling stall 4 out, and I’d expect Luke Morris to be making the most of that by getting Blindedbythelights out in front. The switch of headgear from cheekpieces to blinkers would also suggest he’s going to be ridden forward, and I’m fully expecting this extended trip to bring out a bit more improvement in him.
All he does is stay, and stay well, without quite having the turn of foot to finish things off over 1m6f/2m, but you really cannot knock what he does, or his sheer consistency, and he looks nailed on to run another big race here.
Moon Over Miami (3.05) kept improving throughout last season, culminating in a game win at Newbury in what looked a very competitive two-mile handicap. He looked in need of the run when down the field in the Queen’s Cup at Musselburgh on his reappearance but that should have teed him up nicely for this, and again, stall 7 is not the worst place to be for one that wants to go forward.
Chester May Meeting: Jonny Concrete (3:40)
Jonny Concrete (3.40) was a winner on his reappearance last season at Musselburgh, so he can go well fresh, and ran every bit as well on his next two starts at York and Carlisle, so catching him early season might well be the key, as he went off the boil in the second half of the season somewhat.
A mark of 79 is only a couple of pounds higher than his last winning mark and connections landed a touch at this meeting last year with the well-backed Paddy The Squire. Stall 6 looks a good draw to work from but he’s tactically adaptable in any case, and the booking of Jason Hart is a positive too.
Chester May Meeting: Call My Bluff (4:10)
It’s quite remarkable to think that Call My Bluff (4.10) went off just 11-4 to win the Chester Cup itself back in 2023 and yet he comes here in great form after an easy win at Newbury last time (stole it from the front) for which he only gets a 3lb penalty, and will be a bigger price to win this, the silver division of the Cup itself. We haven’t seen him much in recent years, suggesting he hasn’t been the easiest to train, but he’s got a C&D record of 323, and bar a middling draw in stall 12, which isn’t ideal, he’s got plenty going for him.
Chester May Meeting: Massai Mara (5:20)
I’ll finish off the card with a swing at Maasai Mara (5.20), who is as tricky a customer going as there is, and Chester’s twists and turns might well keep him interested.
He often travels well in good-quality handicaps over hurdles without ever looking like he’s going to finish the job off, and that was sort-of the case again at Wolverhampton last time (when tried in a hood), sent off 40-1 but far from disgraced in finishing fourth. Essentially this is a bit of a shot in the dark in the hope Maasai Mara is on a going day, as if he is, and can be smuggled into this on the bridle, he’ll have a chance late. Should be a big price to do so.
