Ross Burdon Racing – Flying into 2026

Our good start to February continued this past week with Seventy winning on Tuesday at Lingfield. With only one runner during the week it was a great relief to see Seventy get his head in front for the first time under a superb ride from super-sub Callum Shepherd.

Ross Burdon Racing: Super Subs

We didn’t have the ideal start to the day, with booked rider Paddy Bradley, who had ridden Seventy work the previous week, having to be stood down on medical grounds, meaning we were scrambling for a jockey. Luckily time was on our side being in the last race and after speaking to Callum, who rode us a winner on Mesaafi last year, I was confident we had more than capable deputy for Paddy. Seventy had been ridden forward when trained by Richard Hannon and I had been keen to get him to settle and learn to race the right way around which on Tuesday he did perfectly.

Being drawn slightly wide helped Callum tuck into the second half of the field, with only a couple behind him going into the first bend, but being beautifully switched off. The pace of the race noticeably slowed at half way, which was a big worry, but Callum was alive to this and with three and a half furlongs to run started to make a move around the outside of the field.

On turning in Take The Boat, ridden by Matthew Lloyd-Slater, forced Seventy very wide on the sharpest part of the bend and for a few moments I thought our chance had gone, only for the horse to respond to Callum’s urging’s magnificently and fly down the middle of the track to get up and win by just over a length. Even though this race was at a mile and a half, the stats and the way the race was run suggest speed actually won Seventy the race and we may drop him back in trip after this.

Ross Burdon Racing: Upcoming Week

The upcoming week looks much busier than the last two, with two runners at the backend, and possibly a third if by some miracle the ground at Huntingdon isn’t bottomless. On Wednesday Beauty Generation goes back to Kempton where he made his debut for the yard. His historical form would suggest it’s his favourite course, with most of his best form figures being recorded at the venue.

Since he made his first start for us his training has been interrupted by minor niggles and I’m very much looking forward to getting him back onto the track for his good owners, Crest Racing. Being a restricted riders meeting limits our jockey options but we have a good relationship with Rhys Clutterbuck who has ridden us a couple of winners and he came up to have a sit on Beauty Generation last week, Rhys is a very capable rider and his experience in these types of races is a huge advantage.

Ross Burdon: High Point

High Point could make his second start over hurdles at Huntingdon on Thursday, although not being far from there and knowing what rain we have had I will be amazed if the ground is suitable. HP is in great form and we’re desperate to get him back onto a racetrack.

Ross Burdon Racing: Constitution Hill

On Friday all eyes will be on Southwell, with Constitution Hill due to make his flat racing debut, ballot permitting. On the same card our galloping grey, Ernie’s Valentine, will aim to maintain his good winter form in the seven furlong handicap. Ernie has been in superb form all winter and having finished second at the same venue over a mile last month we hope he can cope with the drop to seven furlongs here.

For racing’s sake I hope we get to see Constitution Hill line up on Friday. There has already been such media attention on a race that frankly wouldn’t garner any column inches if the former Champion Hurdler wasn’t involved and the fact it will be broadcast on ITV gives it the potential to have many more eyes on the card than would normally be the case.
