Cheltenham Races Tips: December Meeting 2025

One Horse Town and Minella Study take up a fair proportion of the market, and both have been paddock picks for Trackside recently, One Horse Town looking as fit as a fiddle when scoring here last time and running to a level that his Flat form entitled him to. Minella Study beat the disappointing odds-on favourite Ammes in the Wensleydale Hurdle at Wetherby but that wasn’t a fluke, he looked the part in the paddock and was always holding the runner-up late.

Cheltenham Races Tips: Matiwo (12.10)

Both pieces of form are very solid but I don’t think they’re unbeatable, Money for the unraced Arnolphe would be interesting but a tongue tie first time up is always a concern, and there’s one I like at a price here.

That’s Jane Williams’s Matiwo (12.10), who I saw on debut at Chepstow and liked him a lot; he got warm there and fairly worked up beforehand, hopefully he’ll settle better with that under his belt and like so many from the yard, he should improve a chunk from first run to second. Form says he’s held by Minella Study on a clear line through Ammes but this stiffer test will suit Matiwo (bred to want further) and I can see him in the frame here.

Cheltenham Races Tips: Glengouly (1.50)

Glengouly is going to be a massive price here as he has to race from 7lb out of the handicap, but he’s been running really well lately (since the cheekpieces went on) and that over trips too short; beaten under a length by Mambonumberfive at Aintree (winner has gone in again) and then fourth to Triple Trade here over two miles last time out, Harry Cobden possibly going for home a bit soon and paying the price after the last.

This extra half-mile should help (has been placed over three miles, and even tried his luck in a  Grand National when with Willie Mullins, was on the retreat late when unseating) and surely the booking of Sean Bowen is worth a pound or two here.

Cheltenham Races Tips: Game Colours (3:35)

Best bet of the day comes in the last in the shape of Game Colours (3.35), who misses the last on Friday to try her hand against her own sex here.  She looked a very nice prospect when kicking Rula Bula out of the way at Lingfield last year and ran just as well when beaten half a length by King William Rufus here in April, running on strongly up the hill.

In between those two efforts she was third in the Herring Queen Mares Final at Kelso, another very good run. She needed her first start back at Fontwell and I’m at pains to be with trainer Ben Clarke whenever possible this year; he’s clearly a good trainer, yet his horses are still overpriced. Sean Bowen getting the booking is the icing on the cake.
