Dave Chisnall isn’t in Wolverhampton this week however, Chizzy is back with kwiff to give his Grand Slam of Darts thought ahead of a bumper 9 days of arrers. Read his exclusive weekly diary each and every week with kwiff.
Dave Chisnall: Grand Slam of Darts 2025 Preview
It’s weird not heading down to Wolverhampton for the start of The Grand Slam, having been there 10 of the last 12 renewals prior to missing out this time around. It hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for me however, going out in the group stages the last three years and not really enjoying a good time of it down there.
The tournament itself is a good idea because you get something different than the top 32 in the world, and gives WDF players an opportunity to have a crack at it, which leads to some good stories. But the short format, coupled with me being quite bored in Wolverhampton for a week often leads to me playing stuff other than my best darts.
Grand Slam of Darts Memories
It wasn’t all that bad though, getting to the final in 2014 when Phil was in his pomp. I lost 16-13 and played really well – The Power wasn’t on his A+ game and I could have done better in the first couple of sessions. People talk about ‘The Littler Effect’ and the aura and players being intimidated but I don’t think it compares to what Phil did to the game 10-15 years ago. You would see players crumble on stage with him, from winning the bull and giving you the darts.
But, if you could hurt him early, as the likes of Barney, Michael (Van Gerwen) and Gary (Anderson) could with big scoring there was always a chance. If you saw Phil nibbling his flights, you knew that he knew he was in for a battle!
Grand Slam of Darts 2025
Both Lukes will be fancying their chances this week, with the youngster of the two doing what I never did in the week. No, not becoming World Champion but pass his driving test, so congratulations lol! The scrutiny the pair are both under may really help Beau Greaves, who I think will have a really good week there. The win over the World Champion the other week will have helped settle her nerves before she switches across, and she’s going to be a great addition for the PDC.
In terms of the old boys, James Wade continues to play like he’s evegreen and has a good record here being a three-time runner-up. He probably should have won one, if not two of those finals here, so probably comes with a point to prove and is close to sealing a Premier League spot.
Youngsters Gian Van Veen and Josh Rock are undoubtedly the future of the tour but look short enough at the current prices, when experience counts for so much. Steve (Bunting) and Nathan (Aspinall) know what it takes to go far in tournaments like these and should have good weeks. I’ll be cheering on from the sofa!
