Ross Burdon Racing: September 25th 2025 Update

Ross Burdon Racing

Ross Burdon Racing played host at last week’s Newmarket Open Day, and is back with a review of Sunday’s ongoings, and look at potential runners at Newmarket’s three-day Cambridgeshire meeting.

Ross Burdon Racing: Successful Open Day 2025

This weekend Newmarket hosted it’s annual Henry Cecil open weekend, featuring many of the towns famous yards, studs, vets and Tattersalls opening up to the public over the course of the weekend. We were thrilled to open up as one of two autism friendly yards, along with David Simcock, welcoming guests all morning up until lunch time, when the festivities switched from the yards to the Severals where things such as a Shetland Grand National, Retraining of Racehorses parade and trainers show jumping were all part of the afternoon.

We at RB Racing have always prided ourselves on being as inclusive as we possibly can and along with Autism in Racing we feel we provide that bridge between a busy, bustling yard and somewhere people can come and be chilled whilst still getting that up close experience with the horses. Hollie, once again, out-did herself with the amazing sensory space she created as well as having a full stall of pastries, sweets and cakes on offer for our guests.

Ross Burdon Racing: Week Ahead

After a busy week last week with four runners the weekend was understandably quieter without any runners. We did have two entries in the amateur jockeys Cambridgeshire, but, I decided against running either of them. Waistcoat only ran on the Monday and doesn’t really take his races well enough to back up a few days later and Crest of Light will instead head to Newmarket on Thursday of this week, ground permitting.

The race this Thursday should prove to be less competitive than Saturdays amateur race, being slightly lower in grade with a rating limit of 75 rather than the 80 the Cambridgeshire carried, if we get a shower in the week to ease the ground back to good ground I would be very happy for him to go and run and feel he’s has come forward massively from his first outing for us at Southwell.

Ross Burdon Racing: Crest of Light

Crest of Light hasn’t actually ran that often on grass, only running once on turf at Carlisle where he finished third. If he’s come forward from his first start for us as much as I think he has then he should very well.  Our only other potential runner this week is High Point, he has been given an entry at Haydock on Saturday afternoon, stepping up to 1m6f, which I think will bring about some more improvement from him.

He has come out of his run just over a week ago at Doncaster in great order, he’s extremely fresh and well and the forecast heavy ground will be right up his street. Where I would like a shower at Newmarket, I definitely don’t want too much sunshine in the north west! High Point really does want ground as soft as it can be.

Ross Burdon Racing: Goodbye Gundo

With sales season in full swing, we actually said goodbye to one of our horses this past week. Gundogan who had been with us since I started training was sold in the Tattersalls online sale. Whilst he didn’t win for us, he was placed twice and had been an unlucky loser on a couple of occasions. Hopefully his stable won’t be empty for long, we will busy at all the upcoming sales, starting with Tattersalls Ireland this week in Fairyhouse where we would love to be able to pick up a couple of youngsters to train for next season.
