Galway Hurdle Day 2025: Cathryn Fry’s Huge Preview

Galway Hurdle

Irish racing expert Cathryn Fry is back for Galway Hurdle Day, giving her best bets ahead another huge day at the Ballybrit venue.

Galway Hurdle Day 2025: Cathryn Fry’s Huge Preview

It’s not exciting to be putting up the favourite for the race – but Putyourhandstogether caught my eye in the Grimes hurdle. His first run in open company after winning the Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival and finishing third in the Aintree equivalent. He’s now heading the market at 9/2. The previous two winners of this contest have been four-year-olds: Zarak The brave and Nurburgring. Putyourhandstogether has everything in his favour here.

Galway Hurdle 2025: Biggest Dangers

Second favourite Ndaawi was second in this race last year and second in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. He is up 11lbs since his run here last year.  There are two at bigger prices that have interesting profiles. Firstly, Jalia Moriviere, the choice of Paul Townend, she’ll appreciate the drop back to two miles. Currently 16/1. Trainer Willie Mullins is the leading trainer in this race but that will come as no surprise to anyone!

Galway Hurdle 2025: A Royal Price

I’m also intrigued that Royal Hollow turns out again here after running in the QR on Monday. On that occasion she was stopped twice in running. However, she’s a tough mare who’s hard fit from recent runs and could be overpriced at 25/1. Jockey and trainer have been in decent form lately. So, if you’re betting each-way with six places, I wouldn’t put anyone off backing her.

Trainer Andy Slattery said after Monday’s QR: “She broke slow and was out the back, and then got stopped three times coming up the hill. She didn’t have a blow after it so we’ll see.” Impossible handicaps are like a beacon to me. Although they are often the quickest way to the poor house, I think I may have found an angle in the Galway Blazers on Friday.

Galway Hurdle 2025: Going for Goffer

We all know The Goffer, he’s a standing dish in both Irish and English handicaps. He hasn’t won since the beginning of 2024 but always runs with credit on the big days. He’s now 3lbs below his last winning mark (138 – 135) and Josh Williamson takes off a valuable 7lbs, putting him on a weight of 11-4. ‘The Blazers’ is always run at a mad pace and The Goffer is well able for that. Highly experienced and highly tried. I think connections have found an an opportunity for the eight year old to get back to winning ways.
