The licence holder at Ross Burdon Racing looks forward to this weekend’s runner, with Saturday’s trip to Leicester for Gundogan taking centre stage.
Ross Burdon Racing: Weekend Racing at Leicester
We started the week with two runners on Tuesday. Bearaway ran another solid race on Tuesday evening at Chelmsford, finishing third in the 1m2f handicap which was won by Roger Varian’s, King Power Racing owned, Fox Avatar. The Bear broke well and travelled with his usual zest, looking like he might win with a furlong to go only to be warn down late on, losing second place on the line.
Fox Avatar actually won with a little bit to spare, he was travelling like much the best horse in the race and met plenty of traffic before quickening nicely when he got daylight, he could be a horse that is still in front of the handicapper. This turned out to be Bearaway’s last run for the RB Racing team, as he was sold in the online sale on Wednesday, with Laura Mongan placing the winning bid, he has been a star for us and an absolute pleasure to have in the yard, we wish his new connections the best of luck with him.
Ross Burdon Racing: Earnest Ernie
Our first runner of the evening on Tuesday was Ernie’s Valentine, who finished a respectable fifth in the 7f handicap. Having broke well Jack Mitchell was able to get across from our wide draw and have the perfect sit just off the pace for the first part of the race When the two front runners picked the pace up heading towards the last two furlongs I thought we had a chance to win, but, when Jack asked Ernie for his effort he didn’t quicken straight away, and only picked up when another horse started to close on him.
I’m inclined to think we may need to put some headgear on him next time, as he galloped out to the line well once challenged but just lacked when the race started in earnest. Even so, it was a much improved effort on his previous runs and if he can continue to improve his form for his next start too he should be finding his way into the winners enclosure before long.
Ross Burdon Racing: Leicester Bound
This weekend we just have the one runner, Gundogan goes to Leicester on Saturday evening to contest their 7f handicap. Returning to turf I hope will be a positive, even though his recent placed efforts have come on the all-weather surfaces, as his winning form last season was on grass and he ran well at Leicester last year when trained by Ed Bethell.
Jack Doughty, who rode us our first winner when Mesaafi won at Chelmsford last month, takes the ride and will hopefully maintain his 100% strike rate for the yard! This Farh has shown improved form since being fitted with cheekpieces and will be the most obvious danger, having won and been second in his two starts since sporting his new headgear, whilst Panelli, trained by George Boughey makes his handicap debut from a realistic mark of 75. Our horse is in good form and if he can translate his recent all-weather form back to grass we should be thereabouts.
Ross Burdon Racing: Eclipse Day
The big meeting of the weekend comes from Sandown, where the ‘Clash of the Generations’ takes place in the Coral Eclipse. The English and French Guineas winners, Ruling Court and Camille Pissarro, both line up represent the classic generation and the older stars are headed by recent Prince of Wales Stakes victor Ombudsman. The way Ombudsman won at Ascot was massively impressive and if he were to run to that level again on Saturday it would take an enormous effort to beat him.
The trip could end up being ideal for Ruling Court, who I was disappointed with at Ascot, he never travelled like he did in the Guineas and he was very edgy down at the start. Delacroix comes back to the distance he beat subsequent derby winner Lambourn over so has to be respected, but needs to put behind him a poor effort at Epsom.
