Cathryn Fry’s Huge Cheltenham Tips: Tuesday, Day 1 Fancies

After saying that I wasn’t going to have a bet in the Supreme, I am now having a bet in the Supreme!

Cheltenham Tips: Workahead (1:20)

Ted Walsh has said Kopeck Des Border reminds him of Golden Cygnet. He’s obviously very keen as the hood goes on for his quest towards greatness here. There’s one in the field, that I feel could spoil the party: Workahead. In his second hurdle start at Leopardstown, he carried 5lbs more than Kopek Des Bordes—who had won on debut in the previous race—and posted an almost identical overall time.  Workahead dictated the pace from the front, setting his own tempo and covering the ground from the second hurdle to the finish more quickly. In contrast, Kopek Des Bordes had Gordon Elliott’s Whinney Hill as a target for much of the race.

Of course, Kopek Des Bordes’ jumping was poor that day, and he improved significantly to land a Grade 1 at the DRF. But with the pressure of the Cheltenham Festival, could those early jumping flaws resurface? And why shouldn’t Workahead take another step forward? His time was also two seconds faster than the Grade 2 juvenile contest won by Hello Neighbour—despite carrying 12lbs more.

Beyond the clock, his performance was a joy to watch. He attacked his hurdles with precision, quickened off his own rhythm around the home turn, and powered clear. He brushed aside William Munny—a subsequent winner and runner-up to Kawaboomga—and left the third horse trailing 20 lengths behind. All of this came while the Henry de Bromhead yard was struggling for form. And with a solid pedigree—being a half-brother to the talented Bronn—there’s every reason to believe Workahead has even more to offer.

Cheltenham Tips: Majborough/Touch Me Not (2:00)

Ultimate respect for favourite Majborough here. Thinking of placing a reverse forecast with Touch Me Not.Touch Me Not has form that closely aligns with the key contenders in this race, and he could easily outperform market expectations. The six-year-old, owned by Gigginstown House Stud, wasted little time making his mark, winning on his second start before consistently competing at a high level.

He finished runner-up to L’Eau du Sud in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown in December and again chased home Majborough in last month’s Grade 1 Irish Arkle at Leopardstown. While turning the tables on those rivals may be a tough ask, he could be ridden with patience, ready to pick up the pieces if the race falls apart. Should an opportunity present itself, he’s more than capable of taking advantage.

Cheltenham Tips: Brighterdaysahead (4:00)

There was considerable discussion about whether Brighterdaysahead would take on this race or the Mares’ Hurdle after securing two dominant Grade 1 wins this season. In the end, her connections couldn’t pass up the chance to chase Champion Hurdle glory, and her inclusion adds a fascinating dimension to the contest. We all know that I have been banging on about Brightdaysahead for some time now

I fully believe that with the 7lbs allowance, Constitution Hill will find it very hard to get past her. Look at the horses she has beat this season, compared to Constitution Hill. Not his fault, I know, but I think the overhype of him is the desperation of Great  British Racing, to have a flag bearer. He’s an admirable horse and one that’s had his problems. This is his toughest test to date and it’s the mare that come out on top  for me.

Cheltenham Tips: Puturhandstogether (4:40)

Stencil has been well supported for this contest since his strong second to East India Dock on trials day, where he finished well clear of the third. The French contender looks to have more improvement to come. Total Look didn’t produce the slickest round of jumping at Punchestown in January, but the addition of cheekpieces could sharpen him up.

However, preference is for Puturhandstogether, with Mark Walsh opting to ride him over stablemate Beyond Your Dreams. A winner on his second hurdles start at Cork, he then ran well against older horses when finishing second at Fairyhouse last month. Having shown useful ability on the Flat last season, he looks open to further progress now that he moves into handicap company over hurdles. Beyond Your Dreams remains a key contender, while Sony Bill, Quantock Hills, and Liam Swagger are also worth noting. Puturhandstogether, who impressed when landing a 20-runner maiden hurdle at Cork in December, looks to have plenty more to offer.
