Saturday Racing Tips: Huge National Hunt Cards, March 1st 2025

Saturday Racing Tips

As we enter meteorological spring, we are seeing a lot more horses whose main aim will be the big prizes at the major jumps festivals but there’s still excellent racing before then and we have 3 x Saturday Racing Tips for punters.

Saturday Racing Tips: Huge Jumps Cards, March 1st 2025

Cheltenham is a little too close in a lot of cases, but Aintree, Ayr, Sandown and Punchestown are likely to be informed by this weekend’s action. Here we look at some of the major races on Saturday’s ITV cards, how they might influence the rest of the season and how you might go about finding some winners.

Saturday Racing Tips: Weveallbeencaught (3.15 Doncaster)

A common gateway to the spring, although lacking the recent winners to boast of being a Grand National trial, it is a good pointer for the other end-of-season marathons. The going looks as though it is going to be on the quick side at Doncaster and that won’t suit a few of those who want a proper slog at the trip. Last year’s runner-up Some Scope is respected off just 2lb higher this time, but Nigel Twiston-Davies holds an envious hand, with Weveallbeencaught the best of his trio.

Once thought of as a potential Gold Cup horse, the eight-year-old recorded his first win in two years when grinding his rivals into submission from the front with a fluent jumping display at this course last month, having returned to Twiston-Davies after four starts with Christian Williams.  That was a massive step up on anything he’d achieved over fences and the manner of the success – relentlessly galloping up the straight before being eased down – gives the impression that he would stay the extra two furlongs on this sort of surface.

Saturday Racing Tips: Tellherthename (3.30 Kelso)

There is a £100,000 bonus on offer should the winner of the Morebattle follow up in any race at the Cheltenham Festival, a feat Emmet Mullins achieved with The Shunter three years ago. That prize has once again attracted Mullins to Kelso’s flagship meeting and his Vischio, who was last seen comfortably landing a Listed handicap at the Dublin Racing Festival earlier this month, is likely to prove popular in the market.

The one who looks well treated, however, is Tellherthename, whose latest start saw him tackle the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle in December. He was expected to badly need the run that day, so it was a huge positive to see him split Lump Sum, who was second off topweight in the William Hill Hurdle three weeks ago, and Take No Chances, a subsequent Grade 2 winner.

Tellherthename was entered in the William Hill Hurdle, but the ground at Newbury was far too soft and connections have instead come to Kelso, where ground conditions should be in his favour. He was raised just 2lb for his fine effort at Newcastle and holds an entry in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, so he’s likely to have been aimed at this race.

Saturday Racing Tips: Billytherealbigred (3.45 Newbury)

The £40,000 boost in prize-money for the Greatwood Gold Cup last year saw one of the most competitive runnings and that has continued this year, with one of the biggest fields in recent years. Grand National hopefuls Kandoo Kid, who won the Coral Gold Cup at the track in November, and Iroko (first preference is for the Premier Chase at Kelso) bring plenty of class to the race. The former finished second last year, albeit off a 12lb lower mark.

The latter’s stablemate Billytherealbigred is of most interest, though, having finished second behind Jagwar in a novice handicap chase at Cheltenham’s Trials Day meeting in January. Billytherealbigred was bold in trying to make all that day, just giving best on the run-in, and that has the shape of a formline worth following. He’s just 3lb higher, has conditions to suit and could prove hard to catch on this flatter track.
Julian Alvarez got them back on level terms before the break and they turned on the style in the second half with goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish in a scintillating performance.
