Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy top the bill at this week’s Genesis Invitational, which is being staged at Torrey Pines in San Diego for the first time in the competition’s near 100 year history.
Genesis Invitational: Golf’s Finest head to Torrey Pines for Huge 2025 Renewal
Tiger Woods was supposed to add even more gloss to the Genesis by teeing it up for the first time this year but has withdrawn following the death of his mother. It is still a world-class field gathering on the monstrous South Course at Torrey Pines, hosting because of the fires which last month swept through Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles.
Genesis Invitational: Flourishing Finau
The big names are heading for Torrey Pines – in some cases for the second time in a few weeks – for the staging of the Genesis Invitational. Switched from Riviera, the players will be tackling the 7,765-yards beast of a South Course at Torrey Pines in San Diego, which was used at last month’s Farmers Insurance Open.
Harris English won that event and is priced at 53.00 for a repeat. Tony Finau missed the cut and is priced at 48.00 – yet it’s the latter who gets the nod. That’s a decent price for Finau, a huge hitter and wonderful ball striker who only ever needs his putter to warm up to be a contender. His missed cut at the Farmers was partly explained away by the weather gods doing him a disservice because he has six top-10s in 11 appearances at the southern California lay-out.
Genesis Invitational: Sleep on Sungjae
Scottie Scheffler at 4.75 and Rory McIlroy at 8.35 are well clear in the betting and of the two the latter appeals more having won at Pebble Beach two weeks ago. Scheffler actually has a winless career record in California and looked scratchy coming home down the field in Phoenix. There are too many good players and players in form looking for fast starts to the 2025 season, among them Sungjae Im.
The Korean world No.21 finished third in Hawaii at The Sentry and fourth here at Torrey Pines in the Farmers Insurance. He has also had another pair of top-six finishes on this course over the last three years and confesses to having a soft spot for the place, which is always encouraging to hear.
Genesis Invitational: Promising Pendrith
Taylor Pendrith is another in-form player who shone at Torrey Pines last month and that ought to be the catalyst for another good run this week. The Canadian opened up with a 69, limited the damage when the wind blew and flew out of there with a T7 by his name.
Since then Pendrith finished ninth at Pebble Beach, just the latest in a string of strong finishes over the last 12 months, including May’s win at the Byron Nelson. He has had back-to-back top 10s at Torrey Pines and he’s been driving superbly – fifth in total driving – which is critical on a course when you have to get it out there.
