Newcastle United have not won a major trophy since their Fairs Cup’ success in 1969 but they have come very close several times and were Premier League runners-up in successive years in 1996 and 1997.
5 Greatest Newcastle United Players in PL era
The Magpies have been resurgent since their takeover by the Public Investment Fund in 2021 and will be looking to end their silverware drought as soon as possible. Here we run through the five greatest Newcastle United players since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.
Newcastle United Greats: Alan Shearer
There is no more iconic player to Newcastle fans than Alan Shearer, the local lad turned goalscoring phenomenon. After starting his career at Southampton and winning the Premier League at Blackburn, the Magpies broke the transfer world record in 1996, splashing out £15million to bring Shearer back to his hometown club.
He holds the all-time Premier League goalscoring record with 260 and netted 206 in all competitions for Newcastle, making him the team’s all-time leading scorer. He never managed to lead Newcastle to silverware and had a disastrous short-term spell as manager in 2009 but Big Al remains a universally adored figure on Tyneside.
Newcastle United Greats: Peter Beardsley
A mazy dribbler with an eye for goal, Peter Beardsley had an unusual route to top level football, starting at Carlisle United and Vancouver Whitecaps before a first spell at Newcastle. After spending time at both Liverpool and Everton, the former Wallsend Boys Club star returned to Newcastle, making 185 appearances for the Magpies in his second spell. He netted 58 and assisted 33 in that time and was an integral part of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers.
Newcastle United Greats: Shay Given
The greatest goalkeeper in the history of Newcastle, Shay Given was a stalwart between the sticks for the Magpies over 12 years at the club. A two-time PFA Team of the Year member, the Irishman holds the record for most appearances for Newcastle in Europe and third-most in all competitions.
Newcastle United Greats: Bruno Guimaraes
One of the biggest signings following Newcastle’s takeover was that of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in January 2022. The Brazilian has been key to their success in recent years and is now the team’s captain. Guimaraes has 18 goals and 20 assists in 109 Premier League appearances for the club and has taken his game to a new level this season, aided by the return of Sandro Tonali to Eddie Howe’s midfield.
If Newcastle can fend off interest for their star man in the middle, he could lead them to silverware for the first time since 1969.
Newcastle United Greats: Alexander Isak
Some eyebrows were raised when Newcastle broke their club record transfer to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad in August 2022. However, since then the Swede has scored 48 goals in 73 Premier League appearances and only Erling Haaland and Mo Salah have netted more than his 17 this term.
The club are readying a new contract for their star striker and will hope that they can make him the centrepiece of their team for years to come.
