Three horses to follow this Saturday: Haydock and Ascot, November 23rd
There’s more top class action over jumps domestically this Saturday afternoon with action from Haydock Park and Ascot, meaning its time to share our Horse Racing Saturday tips.
Haydock hosts the first British Grade 1 of the season in the form of the Betfair Chase and there’s also a pair of Grade 2 races at Ascot.
We have selections and analysis from three of the races across the card including a selection in Haydock’s feature race at 3.05.
2.30 Haydock – Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap, 3m½f)
The Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle is one of the stronger betting heats on Haydock’s card in our horse racing Saturday tips.
Emmet Mullins led home a 1-2 for the Irish in last year’s renewal thanks to Slate Lane’s success and he has a fascinating contender this time around in the same colours with Backmersackme.
This lightly-raced five-year-old hasn’t cut much ice on the Flat this term but there was plenty to like about his hurdle run on handicap debut two starts ago when beaten just three-lengths at Worcester.
He gave the impression that he would relish a step up in trip that day and the rain that is in the Haydock forecast in the 24 hours prior to the off is also going to suit this point winner who has won on soft and heavy previously.
A mark of the 125 looks exploitable and he has the right profile for this sort of contest; he should be firmly in the mix at double figure odds if the rain arrives.
Horse Racing Saturday Tips 3.05 Haydock – Betfair Chase (Grade 1, 3m1½f)
The Betfair Chase has struggled for numbers over the last decade or so but there’s a cracking renewal in store on Saturday afternoon with nine declared.
The race has a nice each-way shape to it and Ahoy Senor looks a bit overpriced at around 6-1.
Lucinda Russell’s charge ran a cracker on his reappearance at Aintree last month when finishing his race off strongly and that’s an effort worth upgrading given that he tends to need his first outing of the season.
This will be his first run at Haydock but all his best form has come on left handed flat tracks and there’s every chance that this test will suit.
He brings an official rating of 169 into this race, putting him clear of the remainder of his rivals and given that he’s both getting his optimum trip here, and versatile with regards to ground, this front runner could take some pegging back.
2.05 Ascot – 1st Class Logistics Berkshire National Handicap Chase (3m5½f)
The Berkshire National is a new race on Ascot’s card and it’s attracted an intriguing 11-runner field.
One that looks likely to relish the test is Slipway who returned with a solid enough effort in a Cross Country handicap at Cheltenham last week.
The yard’s chasers often get better with age and with the likelihood he’ll come on from last week’s return, this strong stayer looks like a big price on ground he’ll relish more than some of his rivals.
