After the newly-created top flight of English football started in 1992, new cash reserves for top teams meant fees went through the roof with clubs forking out millions for the top Premier League Transfers during the 90s.
Premier League Transfers: Top 5 Mega Moves of the 90s
Here are the five record transfers that took place before the Millennium was out, including some of the best strikers in world football heading to places like Arenal, Liverpool, Blackburn, Manchester United and Newcastle United before the end of the decade.
Premier League Transfers: Chris Sutton (July 1994, £5m)
Aided by money from local benefactor Jack Walker, Blackburn Rovers set about creating a team to take the league title to the Lancashire town and two years after spending £3m to sign Alan Shearer from Southampton, they went in again to break the British transfer record for Sutton.
The striker had scored 25 goals for Norwich the previous season and proved to be a vital cog in the Blackburn wheel as his partnership with Shearer became one of the most celebrated in Premier League history. He scored 14 goals in the title-winning 1994-95 season, so for Walker, who dreamed of glory for his hometown club, it was money well spent.
Premier League Transfers: Andy Cole (January 1995, £7m)
The following January, top-flight football was rocked by the news that Newcastle, who had been making great strides under Kevin Keegan, had sold their star striker Andy Cole to Manchester United, the team they were looking to challenge for the Premier League title.
The £7m fee was a British record and also included Northern Ireland winger Keith Gillespie as part of the deal, with Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson buying a ready-made goal machine who had scored 34 times in the previous league season. But, again, it was seen as a bargain, as Cole enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League-FA Cup-European Cup treble in 1999.
Premier League Transfers: Dennis Bergkamp (June 1995, £7.5m)
The foundations of what would be Arsene Wenger’s revolution at Arsenal had yet to be laid when Dennis Bergkamp headed to Highbury, and Bruce Rioch was still at the helm when the stylish Dutchman was signed by the Gunners in 1995.
The former Ajax star took time to settle in north London, but went on to flourish after Wenger joined the club and played his full part in securing three Premier League titles, which included their unbeaten season in 2003-04.
Premier League Transfers: Stan Collymore (£8m, July 1995)
Forest forward Stan Collymore had been on the verge of joining Manchester United before the Red Devils snapped up Cole instead, but he got his big move later that year when he headed to Anfield to join Liverpool.
Collymore had helped Nottingham Forest to finish third under Frank Clark, scoring 22 goals and is perhaps best remembered for scoring the winner for the Anfield club in a 4-3 thriller against Newcastle. He went on to play for Aston Villa, Fulham, Leicester and Bradford in the top-flight.
Premier League Transfers: Alan Shearer (£15m, July 1996)
Twelve months later, Newcastle smashed not only the Premier League but the world transfer record when they took local hero Alan Shearer from Blackburn for £15m. Shearer resisted the urge to join Manchester United after winning the Golden Boot at Euro 96 and he would go on to be the Magpies greatest goalscorer.
He was unable to win a trophy for the St James’ Park faithful, but his 206 goals for the Tynesiders were enough to give him a place in Geordie folklore.
