Champions League 2024/2025: Magnificent Madrid
Back in June, Real Madrid won 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley. Now they meet again at the Bernabeu, with the hosts looking to bounce back after a shock defeat away at Lille in the last round of fixtures.
Real have been struggling defensively of late, conceding at least once in six of their last seven games, prompting Carlo Ancelotti to experiment with a back-three in the 2-1 win over Celta Vigo at the weekend. The Reds have won their last seven games across all competitions, which includes victories in this tournament against Serie A’s AC Milan and Bologna.
Their success has had much to do with their defensive solidity, with Liverpool keeping clean sheets in six of their 11 matches so far this season. RB Leipzig are second in the Bundesliga after making an unbeaten start, in which they’ve won five of their seven league games. Yet they have lost against both Atletico Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League and their fiendishly difficult fixture list continues with the visit of Liverpool, who should have too much for the Germans.

The pick of Wednesday’s fixtures sees Bayern Munich taking on some familiar foes in the shape of Barcelona. Barca are now managed by the former Bayern boss Hansi Flick, who has masterminded a run of form that has seen the Spanish giants become the leaders in the LaLiga title race. Flick’s side have found the net on 20 occasions in five home victories this season, with the Bayern legend Robert Lewandowski topping the Spanish scoring charts with 12 goals from ten appearances.
Bayern have also made a strong start under a new manager in Vincent Kompany and are top of the Bundesliga, having won five and drawn two of their opening seven fixtures. With both of these sides playing well, but having tasted a Champions League defeat on the road, the draw could represent a mutually agreeable result.
