A four-week lull in activity gives way to a hectic run to the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season this weekend as we embark on a four-race tour of the Americas, starting with the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas this weekend.
United States Grand Prix: Mighty McClaren
This is the first of six Grands Prix across the next eight weeks, with two triple-headers separated by a three-week break between trips to Sao Paulo and Las Vegas.
It is also the first of three Sprint weekends scheduled for the rest of the season and, after a month-long break and with plenty of points on offer, the majority of the grid are expected to bring upgrade packages to the Circuit of the Americas.
United States Grand Prix: Lively Lando
Lando Norris, chasing his first World Drivers’ Championship, produced a dominant drive in Singapore before the break to further cut into Max Verstappen’s lead at the top of the rankings, and he was on track to claim an extra point until Daniel Ricciardo made a late pit stop to fit fresh tyres.
The Australian exited Formula 1 with a flourish as he took the fastest lap late on, but Norris’ fastest time of 1:34.925 was well clear of Charles Leclerc in third and the McLaren driver had put in the fastest lap in each of the preceding three Grands Prix. Upgrades may play a part this weekend, but the performance advantage the papaya car appears to have is unlikely to be overturned, and Norris clearly has the pace and the motivation to go for a fifth fastest lap point of the season.
United States Grand Prix: Classy LeClerc
Ferrari could manage only fifth and seventh-place finishes in Singapore, but the Marina Bay Street Circuit has always been an outlier of a track, and there is every chance Ferrari’s lead driver could return to the podium this weekend. Charles Leclerc had been in the top three in each of the previous four races prior to his fifth-place finish in Singapore, and the Monegasque driver has historically gone well around the Circuit of the Americas.
He finished third in last season’s Sprint and was on the podium for the Grand Prix in 2022, while the 27-year-old has finished outside the top four only five times this season and already has nine podium finishes to his name.
United States Grand Prix 2024 Mighty McClaren
The start of the 2024 season hinted at another year of Red Bull dominance, but the development team at McLaren have shifted the tide and they head into the final stages of the year leading the World Constructors’ Championship.
Lando Norris won by over 20 seconds in Singapore and one of the papaya team’s two stellar drivers have taken the chequered flag in four of the last six Grands Prix, finishing second in the other two. Barring a disaster at McLaren or a sensational uptick in performance elsewhere, this race is McLaren’s to lose.
